Job summary

Biffa Waste Services is seeking a Shift Leader for our Plastics Recycling Facility (PRF), a 24/7 operation. You will supervise plant operations, manage resources and ensure health and safety, driving continuous improvement in productivity and performance.

The role requires experience in shift supervision within waste management, strong leadership, and a focus on delivering defined KPIs. Excellent teamwork is essential in a unionised, multi-shift environment.

Responsibilities

• Support maintenance and cleaning programs to minimise downtime.

Hours: 40.25 hours per week, working a 4 on / 4 off shift pattern.

Shift Pattern:

• Week 1: 07:00 – 19:00 (Days)

• Week 2: 19:00 – 07:00 (Nights)

Salary: £42,110 per annum.

A quick look at the role.

The Shift Leader will efficiently organise and supervise the operation of the PRF (Plastics Recycling Facility) which will be a 24/7 operation (4 days on/off alternating 12 hour day and night 7:00 - 7:00), ensuring health & safety and environmental compliance, whilst showing continuous improvement in productivity, plant availability and the requirements of sub-products (Glass Cans Plastics ) produced in accordance with the site licences.

Your core responsibilities.

• Monitoring and controlling all resource within the plant in terms of people and equipment, including stock control, maintaining a high level of housekeeping in all areas, to maximise operational productivity, plant availability and plant performance.
• Ensuring productivity and availability exceeds minimum defined standards in terms of tons processed per hour and quality remains above the minimum standard required during the process, whilst driving best practice and continuous improvement in cost control and processing operations.
• Controlling the material which flows into and out of the process to ensure downtimes are minimised.
• Providing accurate and detailed records of all plant operations, settings and stoppages and to attribute causes to all unplanned downtime.
• Supporting the engineering functioning in developing a programme of planned preventative maintenance, inspection and cleaning to minimise downtime and provide records of recurrent faulting.
• Must have good man management skills and be able to stay focussed in a tough and demanding environment.

• Experience as Shift Supervisor or position of similar responsibility ideally in waste management.
• Experience of people and health and safety management within a unionised and multi-shift environment.
• Understanding of the waste industry and relevant laws.
• Proven track record of working to clearly defined service delivery KPI’s
• The ability to communicate with conviction, plan with precision and, most importantly, Work well with others.
