Job summary

Canary Riverside Plaza London, Vignette Collection by IHG is seeking a proactive Shift Engineer to keep luxury hotel operations safe, efficient, and guest-ready around the clock.

You will manage mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and life-safety systems, applying discipline, fault-finding, and regulatory compliance to deliver exceptional guest experiences in a landmark Canary Wharf property.

Qualifications

• Qualified in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering (e.g. City & Guilds or equivalent)
• Strong background in building services operations in a complex, highly serviced environment
• Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and O&M manuals
• Proven problem-solving skills and decisions under pressure
• Clear written and spoken English communication
• Solid understanding of statutory compliance and Health and Safety obligations
• 5 years’ experience in luxury hotels, hospitality, or five-star environments
• Familiarity with premium guest-service expectations

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, diagnose, and repair core building systems (AHUs, FCUs, chillers, VRF, boilers, pumps, MCC panels)
• Adjust and optimise BMS controls for comfort and energy efficiency
• Perform L8 water hygiene tasks per compliance schedules
• Deliver planned preventive maintenance and rapid response to engineering requests
• Support statutory inspections and maintain accurate records
• Perform first-line diagnostics, isolations, and safety interventions
• Maintain plant rooms and technical areas to high safety standards
• Assist the Maintenance Manager with in-room maintenance to protect guest experience
• Respond swiftly to emergencies such as power outages, HVAC failures, or fire alarms

An exciting opportunity has opened for a skilled and motivated Shift Engineer. This is a hands‑on technical role at the heart of hotel operations, responsible for keeping a world‑class luxury environment running safely, efficiently, and reliably around the clock.

As a Shift Engineer, you will ensure the seamless operation of all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and life‑safety systems throughout the hotel. You will apply strong engineering discipline, proactive fault‑finding, and an unwavering commitment to guest comfort and statutory compliance.

You will work with a wide range of plant and building systems, respond to operational issues in real time, and support the delivery of a consistently exceptional guest experience.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Operating, monitoring, diagnosing, and repairing core building infrastructure systems including AHUs, FCUs, chillers, VRF, boilers, pumps, MCC panels, and wider central plant
• Adjusting and optimising BMS controls to maintain comfort conditions and energy efficiency
• Carrying out L8 water hygiene tasks in line with compliance and planned schedules
• Delivering both planned preventive maintenance and fast, effective response to engineering requests
• Supporting statutory inspections and maintaining accurate engineering records
• Performing first‑line diagnostics, isolations, and safety‑critical interventions
• Maintaining plant rooms and technical areas to high safety and housekeeping standards
• Assisting the Maintenance Manager with in‑room maintenance to protect the guest experience
• Responding swiftly and professionally to emergencies such as power outages, HVAC failures, or fire alarm activations

• Recognised qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering (e.g. City & Guilds or equivalent)
• Strong background in building services operations within a complex, highly serviced environment

• Proven problem‑solving skills and confidence making decisions under pressure
• Clear and professional communication skills in written and spoken English
• Solid understanding of statutory compliance and Health and Safety obligations
• 5 years’ experience in luxury hotels, hospitality, or five‑star environments
• Familiarity with premium guest‑service expectations
