Job summary

Meliá Hotels International is seeking a Hotel Chief Engineer for ME London. You will lead the Engineering & Maintenance function, ensuring all building systems run safely, reliably and efficiently.

You will manage preventive and reactive maintenance, oversee contractors, and ensure inspections and compliance are completed on time. The role requires strong leadership, budgeting, and a focus on guest experience during high-occupancy periods.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in hotel engineering, facilities or building-services environments.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and general building systems.
  • Experience managing an Engineering or Maintenance team.
  • Experience managing contractors and external service providers.
  • Good understanding of health, safety and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise multiple operational and maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, especially during emergencies and high-occupancy periods.
  • Desirable: relevant engineering, electrical, mechanical or facilities management qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the Engineering & Maintenance Operations of the hotel.
  • Develop and manage preventive and reactive maintenance programmes.
  • Ensure statutory inspections, testing and certification are completed on time.
  • Monitor energy usage and support sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee external contractors and suppliers, ensuring safety and quality.
  • Identify CAPEX needs and monitor project costs and timelines.
  • Recruit, train and develop the Engineering team.
  • Manage budgets and suggest cost-saving opportunities.
  • Support hotel operations and guest experience by prioritising issues.
  • Act as technical lead during emergencies and ensure continuidad plans.

Mission

As Hotel Chief Engineer, you will lead and oversee the Engineering and Maintenance function, ensuring the hotel’s property, plant, equipment and building systems operate safely, reliably and efficiently.

You will lead the Engineering team, manage preventive and reactive maintenance programmes, oversee contractors and specialist suppliers, and ensure all statutory inspections and compliance requirements are completed within the required timescales. Working closely with the General Manager and other hotel departments, you will minimise operational disruption, protect the long-term value of the property and ensure an environment that supports an exceptional guest experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Engineering & Maintenance Operations – Oversee the day-to-day operation of the department and ensure all hotel engineering systems, equipment and facilities operate safely, reliably and efficiently.
  • Manage Preventive & Reactive Maintenance – Develop and maintain the Preventive Maintenance Programme, monitor work orders, respond to breakdowns and identify recurring issues requiring permanent solutions.
  • Ensure Health, Safety & Compliance – Ensure statutory inspections, testing and certification are completed on time, maintaining accurate records and escalating significant safety concerns appropriately.
  • Manage Energy & Sustainability – Monitor electricity, gas and water consumption, identify opportunities for efficiency and support the hotel’s sustainability and energy-saving initiatives.
  • Oversee Contractors & Suppliers – Manage external contractors and specialist providers, review quotations, monitor quality and ensure works are delivered safely, on time and within agreed costs.
  • Manage CAPEX & Engineering Projects – Identify capital requirements, support refurbishment and improvement projects, and monitor project costs, quality and completion dates.
  • Lead & Develop the Engineering Team – Recruit, train and develop colleagues, allocate daily responsibilities and ensure appropriate operational coverage.
  • Manage Budgets & Expenditure – Monitor maintenance expenditure, review costs, identify savings opportunities and support departmental budgeting and forecasting.
  • Support Hotel Operations & Guest Experience – Prioritise engineering issues according to guest impact and operational risk, minimise disruption and work closely with the General Manager and other departments.
  • Manage Emergencies & Business Continuity – Act as the technical lead during major engineering incidents and ensure appropriate emergency procedures and contingency arrangements are in place.
  • Proven experience in a hotel engineering, facilities or building-services environment
