Job summary

Coventry City Council is seeking a hands-on Service Engineer – Electrician to join its facilities management team at Whitley Depot, Coventry. You will perform hands-on electrical maintenance, repairs and minor works across council buildings with a focus on safety and compliance.

The role covers both planned and reactive work, including installation and testing, with an emphasis on delivering high-quality service and records via CAFM systems. Ongoing assignment and full-time hours apply.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in electrical installation, maintenance and fault diagnosis.
• Experience in commercial maintenance/building services environment.
• Current 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
• 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification.
• UK driving licence.
• Willingness to participate in an out-of-hours/late rota.

Responsibilities

• Carry out reactive electrical repairs, fault diagnosis and remedial works within agreed timescales.
• Undertake planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and electrical inspections.
• Install and maintain commercial electrical lighting systems.
• Install, maintain and fault-find on fire alarm systems.
• Install new EV charging points.
• Install and maintain commercial electrical appliances, including electric cookers.
• Install, modify and replace electrical fixtures, fittings and equipment.
• Carry out electrical testing and inspections, ensuring work meets relevant standards and regulations.
• Complete new electrical installations and upgrades safely and efficiently.
• Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used and any issues identified.
• Use CAFM systems to update jobs, monitor work and provide reports.
• Provide progress updates and proposed solutions to site contacts and the Facilities team.
• Prepare quotations or estimates for remedial works and new initiatives when required.
• Ensure all tools, equipment and vehicles are maintained and used safely.

About the Role

• Report issues outside your responsibility or authority to the Facilities Manager or Team Supervisor.
• Support and mentor apprentices/trainees as required.

Essential Requirements

• Proven experience in electrical installation, maintenance and fault diagnosis.
• Experience working within a commercial maintenance/building services environment.
• Recognised Level 3 electrical qualification, City & Guilds, CITB or equivalent.
• Current 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations qualification.
• 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification.
• Good knowledge of electrical systems, wiring, circuits and safety requirements.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings, technical diagrams and schematics.
• Current UK driving licence.
• Strong understanding of electrical regulations, British Standards and safe working practices.
• Willingness to participate in an out-of-hours/late rota when required.
• Own hand tools suitable for carrying out the role.

Desirable

• Experience installing or maintaining EV charging points.
• Experience with solar and heat pump electrical systems.
• PASMA or IPAF certification.
• Experience working within a local authority or public-sector facilities environment.
• Experience using CAFM systems.

Compliance

The successful candidate will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS check.

The role requires all work to be undertaken in accordance with relevant electrical regulations, British Standards, Approved Codes of Practice, Health & Safety requirements and Coventry City Council policies.

Important Information

This is a hands-on technical role and is not a supervisory or management position. However, the postholder will be expected to support the development of apprentices and trainees through training and mentoring.

Candidates must maintain their professional knowledge and qualifications in line with changing legislation and industry requirements.
