Job summary

Job description

Plymouth City Council's Community Youth Team is seeking a dynamic and enthusiasticSenior Youth Support Worker. This role will strengthen the capacity of theStreet Based Youth Work Team, with a focus on tacklingAnti-Social Behaviour (ASB)and deliveringdiversionary activitiesfor young people in bothcommunity and school settings. The team works toward aprevention-based model, prioritising early intervention through close collaboration with theSafer Communities team,police,Children’s Social Care,schools, and theVoluntary Community Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people across Plymouth. You will help deliver a wide range of targeted and open-access youth work, supporting young people aged 10–19 to develop positive relationships, access support, and make informed choices.

Key Responsibilities:

• Direct Support to Young People:

  • Plan and deliver inclusive, engaging youth work sessions in both street-based, centre based and school environments.
  • Develop and lead community-based programmes and school group interventions that promote confidence, resilience, and personal development.
  • Provide support and signposting to address social, emotional, or behavioural needs.

Programme Coordination and Delivery:

  • Support the day-to-day running of the street-based youth work team and schools based.
  • Assist in the coordination of offsite trips and diversionary activities, including managing medical plans, transport, and parent/carer communication.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of targeted youth programmes based on local needs and intelligence.

Partnership Working and Communication:

  • Work collaboratively with schools, police, and other professionals to identify young people who may benefit from early intervention.
  • Deliver in-school group work, 1:1 intervention, and assemblies to engage students in preventative education.
  • Attend community meetings and events to raise awareness of youth services and support available in local areas.
  • Work in partnership with Voluntary Community Social Enterprise Sector

• Administrative and Development Tasks:

  • Maintain accurate records of sessions, attendance, outcomes, and referrals.
  • Support the effective use of Management Information Systems (MIS) to gather and report data.
  • Contribute to youth engagement through social media, digital platforms, and promotional activities.
  • Supervise and support Youth Support Workers and Volunteers

• Safeguarding and Wellbeing:

  • Work within safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all young people.
  • Build trusted relationships to support and empower young people in making positive life choices.
  • Contribute to a trauma-informed, youth-centred approach that recognises and responds to the challenges young people face.

About You:

  • You will have experience working with children and young people in a youth work, school, or community setting.
  • You will be skilled in building positive, trusting relationships with young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • You will be an excellent communicator, confident in engaging with young people, professionals, and partner agencies.
  • You will be organised, flexible, and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A relevant youth work qualification or equivalent experience is desirable.
  • Knowledge of local services, safeguarding procedures, and referral pathways would be advantageous.
  • Experience working with young people affected by ASB, exclusion, or risk-taking behaviours is highly beneficial.
