Job summary

Recruit 12 is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join a global engineering and manufacturing client in the UK. You will define, develop and integrate electrical and electronic systems for next-generation vehicle platforms, translating customer needs into robust specifications.

The role involves architecture development, supplier management, and ensuring system health across concept to production, with a focus on CAN/CANOpen/J1939 and cybersecurity considerations.

Qualifications

• Experience in systems engineering, software or electrical/electronic engineering environments.
• Strong understanding of electronic systems development from firmware to integration.
• Ability to translate requirements into structured functional specs.
• Knowledge of CAN-based protocols (CANOpen, J1939).
• Experience with validation, verification and system integration testing.
• Awareness of functional safety and cybersecurity in product development.
• Experience using electronic test equipment.

Responsibilities

• Define, develop and integrate electrical/electronic systems across new product programmes.
• Translate customer needs into clear, testable requirements.
• Develop and evaluate system architectures for reuse and optimisation.
• Design and integrate systems across vehicle platforms.
• Coordinate hardware selections for environmental and cost targets.
• Develop software and system architectures for delivery.
• Manage third-party suppliers and coordinate software architecture.
• Ensure robust ECU communication via CAN/CANOpen/J1939/Ethernet.
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams and schematics.
• Support design for manufacture including software deployment and configuration.
• Monitor system health and diagnostics using onboard and remote tech.
• Apply V-Model and structured development methodologies.
• Consider functional safety and cybersecurity throughout development.

Key Responsibilities

• As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in defining, developing and integrating electrical and electronic systems across new product programmes. Working closely with cross-functional engineering teams, you will ensure system requirements are translated into robust technical solutions that deliver exceptional product performance.
• Translating customer needs into clear, testable functional and system requirements.
• Developing and evaluating system architectures to improve commonality, reuse and product optimisation.
• Designing and integrating electrical and electronic systems across complex vehicle platforms.
• Selecting appropriate hardware solutions to meet environmental, performance and cost requirements.
• Developing software and system architectures to support technical delivery.
• Managing third-party suppliers, including requirements definition and software architecture coordination.
• Ensuring robust ECU communication using protocols such as CAN, CANOpen, J1939 and Ethernet.
• Reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Supporting design for manufacture, including software deployment and parameter configuration.
• Monitoring system health, diagnostics and performance using onboard and remote technologies.
• Applying structured development methodologies including the V Model approach.
• Considering functional safety and cybersecurity requirements throughout system development.

Qualifications & Experience

• Experience working within systems engineering, software engineering or electrical/electronic engineering environments.
• Strong understanding of electronic systems development, from low-level firmware through to application-level integration.
• Experience translating requirements into structured and testable functional specifications.
• Knowledge of CAN-based communication protocols including CANOpen and J1939.
• Experience with validation and verification activities, including black box testing and system integration testing.
• Understanding of functional safety and cybersecurity principles within product development.
• Experience using electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, signal generators and power supplies.
• Knowledge of structured development methodologies and design verification processes.
• Experience delivering electronic systems from concept through to production.
