Job summary

Rise Technical Recruitment Limited is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer for a client-based role in Basingstoke/Reading. You’ll provide 4th line support across Linux, Java, VMware, SQL, and distributed systems within a high‑availability, 24/7 environment.

You will work with Software, Hardware, Firmware and R&D teams to improve monitoring, diagnostics and self-healing capabilities, and you will act as a technical SME across the stack, ensuring robust, secure infrastructure for mission-critical

Qualifications

• Active SC Clearance or eligibility to obtain SC Clearance required.
• Senior Systems Engineer / Systems Engineer / Infrastructure Engineer with strong troubleshooting, debugging and root‑cause analysis capability.
• Experience with Redis/NoSQL, Apache ActiveMQ, server load balancing, F5/Alteon/Cisco ACE, RHCSA/RHCT, VCP or CCNA would be advantageous.
• Strong technical knowledge of Linux, VMware, SQL and IP networking, with scripting experience using Bash and/or Python.
• Strong object‑oriented programming, coding and debugging skills; Java strongly preferred, alongside experience with SQL Server/PostgreSQL, stored procedures and complex systems.
• Experience supporting high‑performance, high‑availability, distributed or mission‑critical systems, ideally within a secure or 24/7 environment.
• Strong customer-facing and stakeholder management skills, with a proactive approach to problem solving, ownership and continual improvement.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement improvements across monitoring, diagnostics, troubleshooting, automation and self-healing.

• Maintain defect records, documentation and support for high-availability, fault-tolerant systems in a 24/7 environment.

Are you a Senior Systems Engineer with strong experience across Linux, Java, SQL and high‑availability infrastructure?

This is an opportunity to join a specialist technology and engineering business working on a large‑scale communications network supporting Critical National Infrastructure.

You’ll provide 4th line technical support, troubleshoot complex system issues and work closely with Software, Hardware, Firmware and R&D teams to improve system reliability, monitoring and self‑healing capability.

The Role

• Technical Environment: Java | Linux | VMware | SQL | MS SQL Server | PostgreSQL | Bash | Python | IP Networking | DNS | Distributed Systems | Performance Monitoring | Troubleshooting | Debugging | ITIL | Configuration Management
• Provide 4th line technical support across smart metering head‑end systems and radio access network infrastructure, troubleshooting complex functional and performance issues.
• Analyse system data, logs and performance information to identify root cause, resolve incidents and escape software/firmware defects where required.
• Develop and implement improvements across monitoring, diagnostics, troubleshooting, automation and self‑healing, including the development of support tools.
• Work closely with R&D, Software, Hardware, Firmware and IT teams on system design, code reviews, change requests, releases and continual service improvement.
• Act as a technical SME, maintaining detailed defect records, knowledge documentation and supporting the delivery of high‑availability, fault‑tolerant systems operating in a 24/7 environment.

The Person

• SC Clearance: Active SC Clearance or eligibility to obtain SC Clearance required.
• Experienced Senior Systems Engineer / Systems Engineer / Infrastructure Engineer with strong troubleshooting, debugging and root‑cause analysis capability.
