Jobtailor is seeking an experienced software leader to design, develop, and deliver scientific and engineering software in a fast-paced, data-intensive environment. You will collaborate with engineers and analysts to translate complex methods into reliable software, set architectural direction, and institute robust testing, documentation, and CI practices.

Qualifications

Professional software development experience, typically four or more years, with evidence of leading delivery of non-trivial software.
Advanced Python skills and strong judgement in software architecture, modularity, error handling, and maintainable Python interfaces.
Experience designing, building, testing, packaging, and releasing reusable Python libraries or applications.
Experience establishing engineering practices including automated testing, code review, documentation, dependency management, continuous integration, and Git version control.
Experience with numerical, scientific, engineering, or data-intensive software, including verification of calculations and edge cases.
Ability to understand unfamiliar methods, identify ambiguity, and define precise, testable behaviour with subject-matter experts.
Working knowledge of SQL, including queries to retrieve, filter, join, and aggregate data.
Pragmatic technical leadership and ability to set direction while delivering working software.
Strong written and verbal communication, technical documentation, knowledge sharing, and software handover experience.
Ability to become productive quickly, work independently, and deliver within a time-limited engagement.
Degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or another quantitative discipline is desirable, not required.
Desirable experience with NumPy, SciPy, pandas or Polars, Pydantic, Plotly, or equivalent technologies.
Desirable experience with time-series or sensor data, data validation, numerical optimisation, simulation, statistics, or uncertainty analysis.
Familiarity with typed Python, developer and user documentation, linting and formatting tools, and modern Python project tooling.
Experience verifying scientific software against analytical, experimental, or independently produced reference results.
Experience taking ownership of an early-stage codebase and preparing it for continued development.
Experience in an engineering-led or renewable-energy business.
Experience handling commercially sensitive or customer-supplied technical data.
