Job summary

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK is seeking an experienced Higher Scientist to drive the operational delivery of the Evaluation and Quality Control (EQC) function for Copernicus Climate Change Service datasets. You will develop QA notebooks, work with ECMWF, and mentor junior staff while enhancing data quality assessments across land, ocean and atmosphere observations.

Qualifications

This role requires a degree (PhD or MSc) in Physics, Maths, Data Science or Earth Science.
Strong working knowledge of remote sensing data and Earth climate datasets.
Experience with reanalyses or climate projections is desirable.
Ability to design and follow a scientific work plan.
Excellent communication, organisation and collaborative skills.

Responsibilities

Deliver operational EQC production for climate observations from satellite and in situ data.
Develop user-oriented Quality Assessment notebooks and tutorials with stakeholders.
Collaborate with the CEO group, wider department and ECMWF contracts to produce EQC outputs.
Identify improvements to EQC methods and support data quality research needs.
Communicate data quality findings to diverse stakeholders and input to roadmaps.
Liaise with ECMWF to integrate EQC content into the CDS workflows.
Mentor junior staff and promote NPL capabilities externally.
