Job summary

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is seeking a Senior Quantum Applications Engineer to lead development of quantum computing applications. You will work within the National Quantum Computing Centre to identify high‑impact use cases and drive research in quantum algorithms, software, and hardware.

With a PhD or equivalent in quantum tech, you will mentor staff, collaborate across government, industry and academia, and help shape the UK’s quantum readiness and ecosystem.

Qualifications

• PhD level or equivalent experience in quantum computing, quantum information, or closely related field.
• Demonstrated track record of research in quantum computing (peer‑reviewed papers).
• Experience delivering technical work and collaborating on projects in quantum computing.
• Experience with quantum algorithms in simulation, optimisation, or ML and knowledge of emulation and execution of circuits.
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience with SDKs to program quantum devices.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical work to deliver the team’s objectives.
• Develop and run quantum algorithms; build models and code; program quantum computers using SDKs.
• Collaborate with experts to enable delivery of useful applications in priority sectors.
• Identify and develop use-cases for quantum computing with stakeholders; evaluate potential impact.
• Mentor colleagues and communicate findings; publish non-confidential results.
