Job summary

First Recruitment Group is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor for an Essex-based role with a very competitive salary package, bonus potential, and a company car or car allowance. The role focuses on cost control, contract administration, and overall commercial performance on large EPC substation projects.

You will oversee commercial management from tender through to project completion, with NEC4 contracts and Options A, C, and E; hybrid working arrangements may apply depending on project needs.

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying or related discipline.
• Extensive experience on large-scale infrastructure projects.
• Strong knowledge of EPC and NEC4 contracts (Options A, C, E).
• MRICS or CIOB membership preferred where applicable.
• Proven cost forecasting and commercial reporting capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead commercial and contractual management across full project lifecycle (pre- and post-contract).
• Provide tendering input on budget, bid strategy and risk.
• Administer lump-sum EPC NEC contracts (Options A, C, E) per NEC4 requirements.
• Oversee cost control, cashflow forecasting and financial reporting.
• Manage variations, payments and change control processes.
• Conduct contract risk reviews and mitigation planning.
• Maintain consistent commercial documentation across project portfolios.

Senior Quantity Surveyor | Essex | Very Competitive Salary + Bonus, Car/Car Allowance & Pension

We are working in partnership with a leading engineering and infrastructure organisation to recruit an experienced Quantity Surveyor based in Essex.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially astute QS with a strong background in EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects and experience working with NEC4 contracts.

You will play a key role in overseeing cost control, contract administration, and the commercial performance of complex infrastructure projects.

Role Overview:

The Lead Quantity Surveyor will manage all commercial aspects of large EPC substation projects, ensuring effective contract execution and cost management from tender stage through to project completion.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead commercial and contractual management across the full project lifecycle, including both pre- and post-contract phases
• Provide strategic input on tendering, contract selection, and budget planning with a focus on risk and contingency
• Administer lump sum EPC and NEC contracts (Options A, C, and E) in line with best practice and compliance requirements
• Oversee project cost control, cash flow forecasting, and preparation of financial reports
• Manage variations, payment applications, and change control processes
• Conduct contract risk reviews and support strong risk mitigation measures
• Ensure commercial documentation is maintained accurately and consistently across project portfolios

Candidate Profile:

• Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Construction Law, or a related discipline
• Professional membership (e.g., MRICS, CIOB) is preferred
• Extensive experience working on large-scale infrastructure or construction projects
• Strong working knowledge of EPC and NEC4 contracts, particularly Options A, C, and E
• Demonstrated capability in cost forecasting, procurement strategy, and commercial reporting
• Effective communicator with excellent analytical and negotiation skills
