Job summary

HS2 Ltd in Birmingham is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to join the Depots Engineering team, overseeing design delivery and engineering assurance across civils, buildings and railway systems.

In this role you will act as a key interface between HS2, designers and contractors, coordinating technical responses and reviewing information to resolve issues while maintaining programme and commercial constraints.

Job description

Are you an experienced Project Engineer or Design Manager with experience delivering complex, multidisciplinary rail or infrastructure projects? Do you have the technical breadth to oversee design delivery, manage interfaces and provide engineering assurance across civils, buildings and railway systems?

Salary: £65,853.60 to £85,380 including 20% flexible allowance Location: Birmingham, Snow Hill / Washwood Heath. Hybrid, 3 days per week in the office/site Closing date: 7th October

I am recruiting for a Senior Project Engineer to join HS2's Depots Engineering team, supporting the delivery of the £800m Washwood Heath Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot in Birmingham.

Washwood Heath will be a major operational facility for the HS2 fleet, incorporating an eight-road maintenance shed, 16 stabling roads and capacity for approximately 40 trains. It brings together buildings, civils, track, signalling, electrification and wider railway systems within one highly integrated project.

The project is progressing towards scheme design, with construction planned to follow. This creates an opportunity to remain with the programme through design, construction, testing, commissioning and handover, with the role expected to be required for approximately 7 to 9 years.

I am looking for someone who can act as one of the key engineering interfaces between HS2, its designers and contractors.

You will not be undertaking detailed design yourself. Instead, you will oversee and assure the engineering being delivered, understand the scope and interfaces and coordinate technical responses when issues arise.

Essential requirements

• Approximately 5 to 10 years' relevant engineering experience.


• Experience on large, complex multidisciplinary engineering or infrastructure projects.


• Strong experience overseeing or coordinating design rather than solely undertaking detailed design.


• Background within civils, buildings, mechanical, electrical or multidisciplinary rail engineering.


• Experience managing technical interfaces across multiple engineering disciplines.


• Ability to review technical information, identify issues and coordinate appropriate engineering responses.


• Experience working with designers and/or major contractors.


• Good understanding of project delivery, programme and commercial constraints.


• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.


• Relevant engineering qualification.

Desirable requirements

• Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards chartership.


• Major rail, station, depot or infrastructure project experience.


• Experience with buildings combined with railway systems interfaces.


• Previous experience as a Senior Project Engineer, Project Engineer, Design Manager or similar.


• Experience across design, construction, testing, commissioning and handover.
• Knowledge of track, signalling or electrification interfaces.

I am particularly interested in candidates who have enough technical depth to challenge the engineering while still seeing the project as a whole. A Design Manager with a strong engineering background could be particularly relevant.
