Job summary

HS2's Depots Engineering team is recruiting a Project Engineer to work across civil, mechanical, electrical and railway disciplines on the Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot project in London. You will report to the Lead Project Engineer and coordinate between HS2 design teams and site delivery.

The role offers cradle-to-grave exposure over approximately 7 to 9 years, with opportunities to develop towards chartership.

Qualifications

Are you an Engineer with a few years' experience looking for the opportunity to work across multiple disciplines on a major rail programme?

Would you like to follow a project from design through construction, testing and commissioning to final handover, while developing towards chartership?

Salary: £60,142.80 to £77,830.80 including 20% flexible allowanceLocation: London, NW1. Hybrid, 3 days per week in the office/site

I am recruiting for a Project Engineer to join HS2's Depots Engineering team, supporting delivery of the approximately £200m Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot.

Calvert will become a key operational base for maintaining HS2's infrastructure. The facility will support on-track maintenance machines and teams responsible for track, signalling, communications and wider infrastructure maintenance.

The depot will include a three-road maintenance shed, office and staff accommodation, training facilities, storage, roads, drainage and the associated railway systems required to operate the facility.

This is a particularly strong development opportunity because the team is relatively small. Rather than being restricted to one narrow discipline, you will gain exposure across the engineering of the entire depot.

I am looking for an Engineer with a broad technical background who wants to develop into a multidisciplinary Project Engineer.

You will work directly with the Lead Project Engineer and act as a point of contact between HS2 and the design and construction teams.

Essential requirements

• At least 2 to 3 years' relevant engineering experience.
• A background within civil, mechanical, electrical, buildings or railway engineering.
• Experience working on multidisciplinary engineering, construction or infrastructure projects.
• Ability to review and understand technical information rather than simply administer engineering documentation.
• Good problem-solving skills and willingness to work across disciplines.
• Experience interacting with designers, contractors or site delivery teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• A relevant engineering qualification.
• Genuine interest in broadening your technical experience and developing as a Project Engineer.

Desirable requirements

• Rail, infrastructure, buildings or major construction experience.
• Previous design or site delivery experience.
• Experience as a Project Engineer, Design Engineer, Site Engineer, Setting Out Engineer or similar.
• Exposure to technical assurance, RFIs or engineering queries.
• Knowledge of civils, buildings, track, signalling, communications or associated railway systems.
• Interest in achieving professional registration or chartership.

I am open to different backgrounds for this position. You could currently be working in design and want greater exposure to construction and delivery, or you may have site experience and want to become more involved in design and technical assurance.

The important thing is having enough engineering experience to review and understand what is being delivered, recognise when something needs further investigation and coordinate the right technical support.

With the project expected to require engineering support for approximately 7 to 9 years, this offers genuine cradle-to-grave exposure and the opportunity to develop alongside the depot.
