Job summary

Are you a Senior Project Engineer with experience working on major multidisciplinary rail projects?

High Speed Two Ltd is looking for a Senior Project Engineer to join the client side team responsible for delivering the approximately £859m Washwood Heath Depot in Birmingham.

Washwood Heath is effectively a railway in its own right. The facility will bring together buildings, track, power, signalling, communications, control systems, MEP and operational infrastructure to create a fully functioning depot for the HS2 railway.

This is a delivery focused project engineering role where you will sit at the centre of the technical activity, working closely with the Design and Build contractor and coordinating engineering activity across a highly integrated project.

Your role is to hold the technical thread across the programme, making sure issues are clearly understood, the right specialists are engaged and technical matters are progressed through to resolution.

The Role

Working as part of the Senior Project Engineering team, you will act as a key technical contact for the contractor across the depot programme.

You will coordinate engineering activity across multiple disciplines and manage interfaces between the depot and the wider HS2 railway.

The role is not about being the technical specialist in every discipline. It is about understanding how different engineering areas interact, asking the right questions, identifying where specialist input is required and making sure technical requirements are properly addressed and evidenced.

You will work across the full project lifecycle from design through construction, testing, commissioning and final handover.

The depot includes a wide range of systems and infrastructure, including: OCS and electrical systems, Mechanical and electrical services, including BMS, High voltage power, Communications, Command, Control and Signalling (CCS), Engineering Management Systems, Network Integrated Control Centre, Track and depot infrastructure

This creates a broad project engineering environment with significant interfaces between systems, buildings, infrastructure and the wider HS2 railway.

What You Will Do

• Act as a primary technical contact for the Design and Build contractor across your area of responsibility.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activity across design and construction.
• Review contractor technical queries and submissions, ensuring issues are understood and directed to the appropriate specialists.
• Manage technical interfaces between the depot works and wider HS2 railway systems and contracts.
• Support design and construction assurance and ensure technical requirements are properly addressed.
• Coordinate technical risks, assumptions, issues, interfaces and actions through to resolution.
• Work with HS2 Subject Matter Experts to develop practical and technically robust solutions.
• Support technical change, including Early Warnings and Compensation Events, and assess the impact on cost, programme, quality and delivery.
• Support NEC3 Supervisor responsibilities within your area of responsibility.
• Support Principal Designer Representative responsibilities under CDM 2015.
• Contribute to testing, commissioning, operational readiness and final handover.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Senior Project Engineer who is comfortable working across disciplines and managing complex technical interfaces on major rail projects.

Your engineering discipline can be varied. We are open to engineers from areas including OCS, MEP, electrical, power, communications, CCS, signalling, track or other relevant disciplines.

What is essential is your experience working across a major multidisciplinary rail project and your ability to understand how different engineering disciplines and systems need to work together.

You may currently be a Project Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, Design Manager, Client Representative Engineer, Delegated Project Engineer or similar.

Relevant project experience could include:

• Major rail stations and depots
• Major resignalling or rail systems projects
• Rail remodelling and railway infrastructure schemes
• High speed rail
• Other large multidisciplinary rail programmes

Experience within a large Design and Build or joint venture environment would be particularly useful.

Essential Experience

• Significant project engineering experience on a major multidisciplinary rail infrastructure project, within Design & Build environment.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activity across design and construction.
• Experience coordinating engineering activity across multiple disciplines.
• Experience managing technical interfaces between systems, disciplines or contracts.
• Strong understanding of technical assurance and contractor design delivery.
• Ability to assess technical issues, identify the appropriate specialist input and drive matters through to resolution.
• Experience working across design and construction phases.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Understanding of NEC contracts, ideally NEC3 especially change management (EW, CE’s)
• Working knowledge of CDM 2015 and construction assurance requirements.

Desirable Experience

• Experience across design, construction, testing and commissioning.
• Knowledge of railway systems integration and interfaces between discipline contracts.
• Experience supporting NEC Supervisor or Principal Designer responsibilities.
