Job summary

SSE plc is seeking a Senior Lead Project Engineer in Scotland to lead multi-disciplinary HV transmission projects, coordinating interfaces across substations, overhead lines, protection and control, and civil disciplines.

The role requires base location in Scotland with 50% in-office presence across Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness, and offers a salary between £59,800 and £89,800 plus car or car allowance, plus a performance-related bonus and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in HV transmission substations design and construction, including primary plant, AIS/GIS, protection and control.
• Proven ability to develop optimum project solutions, manage timescales, and handle multiple projects in Transmission or similar.
• Strong communication skills enabling clear discussion of technical issues with senior management and key stakeholders.
• Solid knowledge of CDM & ESQCR and regulatory requirements relevant to assets and projects.

Responsibilities

• Mentor less experienced engineers and manage consultants/contractors to support effective decision making.
• Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary interfaces across substations, OH/OL, protection and control, and civil disciplines to deliver projects on time and to scope.
• Drive design maturity and ensure contractor deliverables are signed off to required quality and programme.
• Coordinate design assurance reviews and Gate documentation per Large Capital Projects Governance.
• Ensure design and interface risks are clearly identified and progressed collaboratively.

The role

SSEN Transmission have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Lead Project Engineer to join our multi-disciplined engineering team to help develop and deliver our portfolio of high profile, high value and technically complex projects.

The role will require close collaboration with multi-disciplinary engineering teams, Operations, Delivery, contractors, consultants and other key internal and external stakeholders to co-ordinate technical interfaces, resolve engineering issues and support timely project decisions.

You will

• Support in the mentoring and guidance of less experienced engineers within the engineering team, to support in the growth of Lead Engineer capability within the business and proactively manage consultants and contractors to support effective decision making.
• Drive the project team in the development and delivery of projects across transmission providing leadership, co-ordination, and ownership of interfaces between multiple technical disciplines where required. Lead and co-ordinate key engineering interfaces across substation, overhead line/cable, protection and control, civil disciplines, ensuring interface risks, actions and decisions are clearly identified, understood and progressed collaboratively.
• Implement and comply with CDM duties, procedures and practices, and all other regulatory requirements associated with the nature of substation and electrical system design.
• Prepare and co-ordinate design assurance reviews and the delivery of key project Gate documentation as per Large Capital Projects Governance.
• Drive design maturity and delivery of scope to required quality and programme whilst ensuring all contractor deliverables are signed off accordingly.

You have

• Sound technical understanding of HV transmission substation engineering (ideally including primary plant, AIS/GIS and protection and control) and the key interfaces between electrical, civil and secondary systems. Demonstrable experience of design and construction of transmission substations.
• Extensive experience of project development, within Transmission or a similar industry, through the optioneering and initial design phases, with an ability to develop the optimum project solution, deliver to timescales and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline, with Electrical Engineering preferred. Candidates from other engineering disciplines with demonstrable HV transmission substation experience will also be considered. Chartered Engineer status, or working towards this, would be desirable.
• Effective communication skills, and you must be able to communicate often complex technical issues clearly and concisely to facilitate decision making by senior management. You will be able to communicate effectively with key stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally, with an appetite for building strong, lasting relationships.
• An excellent technical understanding of relevant legislation and the implications for both Assets and Projects, including CDM & ESQCR, alongside a collaborative and solutions-focused approach to engineering challenges.
