Job summary

SSE plc in Scotland is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer to join the Offshore AC Project Engineering team, delivering island projects and connections to HVDC systems, covering 33kV to 400kV. You will lead design reviews and support project engineers across the offshore portfolio.

The role focuses on technical leadership, risk management, and collaboration with internal teams and external consultants to deliver safe, compliant, and innovative network solutions for net zero.

Qualifications

• Demonstrable experience managing the design development for Transmission projects or complex multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
• Understanding of relevant legislation and technical standards and their implications for transmission design.
• Effective communication to senior management to facilitate decisions.
• Ability to build strong, lasting relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Degree in Electrical Engineering; Chartered Engineer status or working towards.

Responsibilities

• Review and approve substation designs from 33kV to 400kV including diagrams and scope.
• Promote best practice and innovative technology options to manage engineering risks.
• Drive decision making and peer review across projects.
• Support and direct Project Engineers and advise on training needs of the Substation Engineering Team.
• Oversee performance of external engineering consultants and contractors in the supply chain.
• Collaborate with SSE engineering management to recruit and develop the team.

Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations – Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen & Inverness.

Salary: £59,800 - £89,800 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

As part of SSEN Transmissions Offshore Portfolio of works, we have an opportunity for a Senior Substation Engineer to join our Offshore AC Project Engineering team to help drive forward our Island projects and successfully deliver a network for Net Zero. Our Island projects facilitate the connection to our HVDC systems and include state-of the-art AC plant, grid control and stabilisation technology.

You will

• Review and approve primary substation designs, from 33kV to 400kV, through the development and execution phases, including Single Line Diagrams, Stage by Stage Diagrams, Electrical layouts and Scope of Work documentation.
• Promote best practice within the Substation design, bringing your experience to provide suggested improvements in specifications, innovation of technology options and management of engineering risks.
• Drive decision making and support other projects through peer review of key issues.
• Support and direct Project Engineers within their specialist remit, using your technical expertise. The Project Engineers are managed directly via Engineering Managers; the Senior role is to provide technical support through your expertise and in doing so support the Engineering Manager. This will include support during recruitment and advising on Training and Development requirements of the Substation Engineering Team.
• As well as the focus on the internal SSE Engineering resource, you will also take a key role in advising on the performance of the external resource of Engineering Consultants and Contractors who are all part of supply chain delivering a significant portfolio of work.
• Drive decision making and support other projects through peer review of key issues.

You have

• Demonstrable experience managing the design development for Transmission projects, or complex multi-disciplinary engineering projects and be comfortable to technically assess issues and/or problems and critically assess a range of technical solutions.
• An excellent technical understanding of relevant legislation and technical standards and the implications of these on design development and the Transmission network for both Assets and Projects, including CDM.
• Effective communication skills are essential, and you should be able to communicate complex technical issues clearly and concisely to facilitate decision making by senior management.
• Effective working relationships with key stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally with an appetite for building strong, lasting relationships.
• A degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline and ideally be a Chartered Engineer in a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.
