Epoch Biodesign is a well-funded, venture-backed start-up using biology to make every type of plastic recyclable.
Using a unique combination of AI, synthetic biology and green chemistry, we are scaling enzymatic recycling processes to transform unrecyclable plastics into new sustainable materials and chemical building blocks. These processes yield substantial reductions in carbon emissions and prevent waste from entering landfill or the environment. They also generate disruptive unit economics, allowing us to scale our solutions quickly to solve this urgent challenge.
We’re already working with major players across polymer manufacturing, fashion and automotive, and are scaling up to our first demo production facility in 2025.

We're looking for an experienced and innovative Senior Process Engineer to join process team. We work in relatively small teams, so there is an opportunity to make a real difference. We’re a positive, driven team who enjoys what we do and is not afraid to roll up our sleeves when it counts, and we're all passionate about sustainability and the environment.

Reporting to the Head of Scale-Up , you will play a crucial role in developing and scaling up processes for the enzymatic depolymerisation and repolymerisation of polymers.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge solutions that address global sustainability challenges while mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

• Drive Process Innovation : Design and run experiments focused on enzymatic plastic recycling and polymer regeneration.
• Lead Scale-Up Projects: Manage the transition from lab-scale R&D to pilot and full-scale operations, including process design and commissioning.
• Engineer Solutions: Tackle complex technical challenges and deliver high-impact results across product and process development.
• Mentor & Collaborate: Guide junior engineers and engage with partners, customers, and internal teams to align on goals and outcomes.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Qualifications : Master’s degree in chemical engineering (or related) and Chartered Chemical Engineer status.
• Experience : 7+ years in process/product development, with hands-on expertise in scale-up, equipment design, and plant commissioning.
• Skills: Strong leadership, data analysis, project management, and the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts.
• Project and Team Management: Ability to independently design, plan, and execute project tasks and scientific R&D. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills. Ability to produce and present technical information for internal and external audiences. Experience managing, mentoring, and developing junior engineers.
• Mindset: Passion for sustainability and a drive to innovate in recycling, waste, and biotechnology sectors.
• Familiarity with stability testing and organic compound analysis
• A full, clean UK driving license
