Job summary

The Ministry of Justice is seeking a Senior Probation Officer to provide leadership within a Local Delivery Unit. You will manage staff, ensure high‑quality practice, and deliver services in line with national standards and contracts with HMPPS, CRCs and local plans.

We offer hybrid working where possible, with 37 hours per week and flexible patterns. Key requirements include substantial probation experience, risk assessment expertise, and a strong understanding of multi‑agency collaboration.

Qualifications

• Substantial experience with a proven record of good practice in a variety of settings (including offender risk assessment and management) as a Probation Officer or from working within another criminal justice agency or related work context.
• Understanding of the Probation Service role in the Criminal Justice System and in a multi-disciplinary setting.
• Experience of working under pressure and meeting demanding deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Provide effective management and leadership to the team.
• Be accountable for the quality of practice and team performance against standards.
• Ensure resources, including interventions, are deployed cost effectively and deliver value.
• Access, interpret and apply performance data to maximise team performance.
• Support staff development and address underperformance and health and safety matters.
• Contribute to public protection through multi-agency work and case reviews.
• Promote continuous improvement and innovation in service delivery.
• Represent the NPS with partners and stakeholders.
