Senior / Principal Hardware Engineer – Space Imaging

• Chelmsford, Essex (4 days p/w in office)

Space science is at the core of understanding the Universe's origins and future. The sensor device technology includes Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs), CMOS image detectors (visible and infra-red) and their associated Read Out ICs (ROICs). From the earliest signs of the Big Bang to the effects of solar activity on the Earth, the detailed scientific information and images obtained with Space Imaging’s CCD and CMOS sensors are helping us understand more about our surroundings.

The imaging sensors developed and tested at the Chelmsford site have been used on humanity's most important space imaging missions. These include the Hubble Telescope, Kepler, GAIA, Mars Rovers, New Horizons, and Rosetta, among others.

Key responsibilities: Hardware Engineer

• Designing PCBs for space applications, including component selection, schematic capture, analysis, documentation, stack-up definition, and managing external layout activity.
• Developing and presenting concepts and designs that meet requirements, driven by internal and external customer needs. Maintaining and updating compliance verification matrices related to electrical requirements.
• Capturing detailed system architecture through interface diagrams and charts; using these to enhance lifecycle documentation for efficient development and review processes.
• Preparing and presenting documentation relevant to electrical design for gate reviews, ensuring clear communication to all stakeholders.
• Driving departmental capabilities, including mentoring and training engineers for experienced applicants.
• Leading verification and testing of electronics, including preparing comprehensive documentation.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications: Hardware Engineer

• Knowledge of PCB design approaches for high-speed circuitry.
• Ability to create innovative electronic designs that add value to test systems.
• Experience working to high-reliability standards.
• Proficiency in PCB CAD tools, with experience in CADENCE or ALTIUM preferred.
• Strong understanding of electronics and electrical interfaces.
• Ability to communicate complex technical data clearly.
• Experience in space electronics is advantageous.
