Job summary

bp is seeking a Principal Platform Engineer to define strategy and architecture for bp’s engineering and data platforms. You will lead convergence across cloud-native infrastructure, SaaS solutions, and internal platforms, acting as the technical authority without direct people management.

You will shape reference architectures, patterns for identity and data integration, and governance, collaborating with AI and software teams and external partners to enable scalable business outcomes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical subject.
• Extensive experience in platform engineering and enterprise architecture.
• Deep knowledge of cloud-native architecture patterns: containerisation, service mesh, API gateway design, event streaming, IaC.
• Demonstrated experience integrating enterprise SaaS solutions with internally developed systems.
• Track record as a senior technical authority influencing architecture and engineering decisions at scale.

Responsibilities

• Define and maintain a platform convergence strategy with a clear current-state, target architecture, and transition path.
• Lead architectural design decisions at the intersection of internal platforms and enterprise SaaS, establishing integration patterns and governance.
• Act as the principal technical authority for platform engineering across the organisation, guiding design and cloud-native patterns.
• Drive resolution of cross-platform integration challenges, including identity, data flow, and API design, ensuring durable, secure decisions.
• Produce and maintain architecture strategy documents, reference architectures, and decision records for engineering and executives.
• Collaborate with AI engineering, software engineering, and external partners to ensure platform decisions enable business and AI capabilities.
