Job summary

Airalo, the world’s first eSIM store, is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to shape our global platform used by millions. You’ll lead architecture for high‑scale PHP services, primarily with Laravel and Symfony, across AWS and Docker environments. Remote UK candidates only, with English as the working language.

You’ll mentor engineers, enforce SOLID and testing standards, and drive SOA/microservices while collaborating with Product and DevOps. AI-assisted development is encouraged.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional backend development experience with PHP
• 4+ years building enterprise-grade apps in Laravel or Symfony
• Mastery of distributed systems and event-driven patterns (SQS, Pub/Sub)
• Experience architecting on AWS and containerized environments with Docker
• Fluent English and ability to communicate complex trade-offs
• Experience with SaaS/PaaS, SOA, or microservices
• Knowledge of eSIM/GSMA technologies and Traveltech familiarity
• Bonus: building or maintaining custom SDKs

Responsibilities

• Lead design of high-performance distributed systems handling global traffic
• Develop and refine services to improve scalability and efficiency
• Drive transition toward SOA for modularity and resilience
• Set the bar for code quality with SOLID, patterns, tests
• Coach mid-level engineers through deep code reviews
• Identify bottlenecks and implement advanced caching and DB strategies
• Partner with Product and DevOps to translate requirements into roadmaps
• Lead 7+ years backend PHP and 4+ years Laravel/Symfony experience
• Mentor teams and promote best practices in architecture
• Ensure secure, scalable, and reliable backend services
