Job summary

Airalo is seeking a senior backend engineer to lead the design of high-performance distributed systems and drive the transition toward a service-oriented architecture, enabling modularity and resilience across global traffic.

You will coach mid-level engineers through code reviews, partner with Product and DevOps to translate requirements into scalable roadmaps, enforce SOLID principles, and advocate for automated testing and CI/CD.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend development with PHP and 4+ years in Laravel or Symfony.
• Expertise in distributed systems, AWS, containerization, and clear English communication.
• Experience with SQL/NoSQL, performance tuning, and scaling enterprise apps.
• Ability to work effectively in a remote UK environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design of high-performance distributed systems capable of handling global traffic.
• Develop and refine services to improve scalability and efficiency.
• Drive the transition toward a service-oriented architecture (SOA) for modularity and resilience.
• Set the bar for code quality by enforcing SOLID principles, design patterns and testing standards.
• Coach mid-level engineers through code reviews and knowledge sharing.
• Identify bottlenecks and implement advanced caching and database strategies; partner with Product and DevOps.
