Job Summary: The Senior Paint Sprayer will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the painting process at Newport, ensuring that all painting tasks meet special process requirements and high standards of quality. This role includes a combination of hands-on painting work and leadership responsibilities, managing both the painting team and the paint stores. The Senior Paint Sprayer will play a critical role in optimising the painting process, reducing costs, and maintaining compliance with health and safety standards.

1.0 Key Responsibilities
  • 1.1 Carry out high-quality spray-painting work on trains and trams, ensuring all surfaces meet the required standards in line with special process and customer specifications.
  • 1.2 Lead a team of paint sprayers, providing guidance and oversight to ensure work is completed efficiently and to a high standard. This includes mentoring less experienced staff and ensuring proper training and skill development.
  • 1.3 Oversee the painting process from start to finish, ensuring that all procedures are followed. Implement and maintain 5S practices (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain) to ensure an organised and efficient work environment.
  • 1.4 Manage the paint stores, including ordering materials, maintaining stock levels, and ensuring paints are stored under the correct conditions. Coordinate with the procurement team to ensure materials are sourced efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • 1.5 Ensure all work adheres to special process standards, with strict compliance to quality control measures. Conduct regular inspections to ensure that the paint application is free from defects and meets quality benchmarks.
  • 1.6 Coordinate with the Production Manager and Team Leaders to ensure that painting schedules are aligned with project timelines. Contribute to planning efforts to ensure that paint resources are utilised efficiently across multiple projects.
  • 1.7 Ensure all painting tasks are conducted in line with health and safety regulations, minimising risk and maintaining a safe working environment for the entire team. Ensure that PPE is worn and maintained according to company policy.
  • 1.8 Lead initiatives to improve the painting process, reduce material waste, and enhance overall efficiency. This includes engaging in problem-solving using techniques such as the 5 Whys and Fishbone (root cause analysis) to identify and resolve issues.
2.0 Record keeping
  • 2.1 Ensure accurate records are completed and maintained in accordance with procedures in place, and work in progress is communicated to Line Managers and team members.
3.0 Health, Safety & Environment
  • 3.1 Ensure that all work carried out is compliant with health, safety and environmental legislation and Company policies and procedures.
4.0 Quality
  • 4.1 Ensure all work carried out is compliant with Company quality management systems/policies and procedures.
  • 4.2 Carry out quality checks to ensure, where relevant, product meets quality and safety standards.
5.0 General
  • 5.1 Is pro-active in the role and identifies improved ways of supporting the Company in managing its objectives.
  • 5.2 Participate as and when required in team and one-to-one meetings and undertake training (job specific, health & safety, environmental) relevant to the role.
  • 5.3 Keep up to date with developments within the Company and other sector-wide practices that influence the day-to-day activities within the role, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and any other relevant external/internal factors, for example, Company policies and procedures, Quality, Health & Safety, and Environmental.
  • 5.4 In the course of employment, complete confidentiality is maintained in respect of the Company, its dealings, transactions, and all other information relating to clients/ customers and staff.
  • 5.5 Promote the Company by whatever means are appropriate and available so as to ensure a positive image to customers/clients.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience Essential Desirable
  • Significant experience of paint spraying, including experience in a senior or supervisory role, ideally in an industrial or automotive setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of various spray-painting techniques and equipment, including electrostatic, air-assisted, and HVLP systems.
  • Strong understanding of painting materials, techniques, and surface preparation requirements.
  • Experience managing stock levels and material procurement processes.
  • Knowledge of compliance standards in line with special process requirements and experience working within a highly regulated environment.
  • Proven ability to lead a team, mentor junior staff, and ensure high levels of performance.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining 5S principles and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Ability to use problem-solving tools such as Fishbone Diagrams and 5 Whys to resolve production issues and enhance efficiency.
  • Excellent organisational skills to manage multiple projects and ensure efficient use of resources and materials.
  • In‑depth knowledge of health and safety regulations related to industrial painting processes, with experience ensuring compliance within the workplace.
  • Previous experience in the rail industry or similar industrial settings.
  • Working knowledge of Cheli (or similar quality management systems) to monitor and validate painting quality and compliance.
  • Experience with electrostatic painting processes and other advanced painting techniques.
