Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Senior Overhead Line Engineer to deliver transmission projects across Scotland and the wider UK. You will lead design activities from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth, mentoring engineers and coordinating across multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, compliant energy networks.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline.
• Demonstrable experience in overhead transmission line projects up to 400kV.
• Strong understanding of overhead line design principles including structure spotting, route optimisation, conductor selection, clearance assessments and line performance requirements.
• Experience supporting major transmission infrastructure projects, grid reinforcement schemes, renewable energy connections or wider energy network developments.
• Experience with HTLS conductor technologies and network optimisation solutions.
• Knowledge of industry design standards and engineering best practice relating to overhead transmission systems.
• Experience with design tools such as PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE would be advantageous.
• Knowledge of studies including conductor galloping, EMF, acoustic and wake effects would be beneficial.
• Ability to provide technical leadership and act as trusted advisor to clients and teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience with professional bodies such as CIGRE, IEEE or IET would be advantageous.
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or commitment towards registration.
• Willingness to travel to project sites across Scotland, the UK and internationally.
• Passion for shaping Scotland's energy network and growing WSP's overhead line capability.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support the delivery of overhead line engineering and design activities across transmission and distribution projects 11kV–400kV.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to engineers within multidisciplinary teams.
• Prepare technical reports, design documentation, specifications and engineering proposals.
• Undertake overhead line design activities including route development, modelling, structure spotting, clearance assessments and line optimisation studies.
• Carry out sag-tension calculations, blowout assessments, swing angle studies and other analyses.
• Support feasibility studies and option assessments to identify technically preferred solutions.
• Provide technical input during stakeholder engagement and regulatory processes.
• Review deliverables to ensure designs meet standards and client requirements.
• Support project delivery through design reviews and quality management.
• Contribute to innovative engineering solutions and technical excellence initiatives.
• Actively participate in industry forums to shape overhead line engineering.
