Job description

Job Description

A leading provider of innovative laser systems to help people in various global markets, including but not limited to renewables, microelectronics, research, life science, automotive, and medicine.

We seek an experienced Senior NPI Reliability Engineer to work as part of the design and development team on cutting-edge laser products. As an NPI / Reliability Engineer, you will collaborate with the mechanical and optical development teams to ensure design for manufacturing and reliability are prioritized throughout the development cycle of our laser systems.

Your focus on reliability will involve developing test plans for laser systems and sub-systems to validate their reliability in accordance with product lifecycle expectations. You will identify critical components and provide insights to enhance lifetime performance through testing and analysis.

You will also support the optical development team in diagnosing production and field issues by analyzing data, working with quality teams to understand system use, and ensuring product compliance with specifications through HALT/HASS testing to identify weaknesses and implement improvements.

During prototype and pilot production, you will provide DFX feedback, assist in resolving design issues, and supply necessary documentation, tooling, and training for manufacturing. Ensuring the product meets quality standards and testing products effectively will be key responsibilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct hands-on testing on systems and components, setting up experiments and collecting data using tools like accelerometers, thermocouples, and oscilloscopes.
  2. Perform lab-based testing to optimize processes and designs, including environmental testing, material testing, and component improvements to identify and address weaknesses.
  3. Influence design and engineering teams to incorporate Lean and Six Sigma principles for quality and efficiency.
  4. Ensure designs are manufacturable and reliable, leading design FMEA processes for modules.
  5. Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and external testing facilities.
  6. Collaborate with field service teams to gather customer validation data.
  7. Maintain laboratory standards and equipment.
  8. Create reliability models for systems.
  9. Analyze and present statistical data from testing, manufacturing, and suppliers.
  10. Design test profiles and program equipment to execute tests.
  11. Build prototype and pilot laser systems.
  12. Define, test, and implement production tooling.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  1. Experience in manufacturing environments, especially transitioning from design to production in high-tech settings.
  2. Background in reliability or system testing, with knowledge of failure lifecycles.
  3. Degree in science, technology, engineering, or equivalent industrial experience.
  4. Understanding of vibration profiles and their effects on systems.
  5. Proficiency in statistics related to reliability and failure analysis.
  6. Passion for problem-solving and continuous improvement, with a drive for positive change.
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  8. Quick learner with hands-on experience, eager to understand lasers and their operation.

Additional Skills

  • Knowledge of NPI processes and project planning.
  • Experience with PLM software (e.g., Agile).
  • Cleanroom experience.
  • Understanding of humidity, pressure, thermal expansion, and their effects on sealed systems.
  • Knowledge of lasers, optics, electronics, and opto-mechanics.
  • Experience with optical fiber handling.
  • Proficiency in Python, C#, LabVIEW, or similar programming languages.
  • Understanding of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
