Job summary

Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford, an AI R&D company based in Oxford, invites a Senior Machine Learning Scientist to lead a growing ML team while contributing technically on projects. You will shape ML engineering practice across the Lab and stay closely involved in delivery, mentoring engineers and guiding architecture decisions.

This is a permanent, hybrid role with opportunities to influence multiple client engagements.

Qualifications

• A STEM degree or equivalent practical experience with 7+ years in ML/related roles.
• Strong software engineering background with production-system delivery experience.
• Experience leading ML engineers or technical contributors in delivery-focused settings.
• Comfort supporting pre-sales or technical discovery work with commercial teams.
• Judgement to lead solution design and assure engineering quality without being hands-on on every project.
• Strong communication skills to challenge stakeholders when needed.

Responsibilities

• Line-manage and develop ML engineers: coaching, mentoring, feedback, hiring input.
• Stay hands-on with technical delivery on selected projects while leading engagements.
• Build ML engineering best practices across the Lab.
• Collaborate with Project and Account Management to scope ML solutions that drive customer value.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams of ML engineers, scientists, and software engineers to ensure robust, scalable systems.
• Provide oversight and QA across concurrent projects, flagging risks early.
• Lead use case discovery and assist pre-sales with commercial teams.
• Drive reuse of shared frameworks and tooling across projects, communicating risks clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
