Job summary

Government Recruitment Service is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Darlington to lead the design, development and deployment of production‑grade ML solutions. You will provide technical direction and collaborate with data scientists, software engineers and stakeholders to turn complex challenges into scalable AI products.

The role champions MLOps, secure and ethical AI, and sets engineering standards across the ML lifecycle, from data prep to monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development and deployment of complex ML solutions with technical direction.
• Provide technical leadership across the ML lifecycle from data prep to deployment and monitoring.
• Set and champion engineering standards for ML development including testing, version control, code review, documentation, security and maintainability.
• Lead the adoption and development of MLOps practices, including CI/CD, automated testing and deployment, model monitoring and reproducible ML workflows.
• Influence the department’s strategic approach to ML/AI, identifying opportunities for innovation and translating priorities into technical solutions.
• Provide technical guidance and assurance on ML solutions, making informed decisions on architecture, scalability, performance, reliability and risk.
• Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex ML concepts to support decisions.
• Champion responsible, ethical and secure AI, embedding fairness, privacy, bias, cyber security, data protection and model assurance.
• Build ML engineering capability across the organisation by sharing knowledge, coaching practitioners and establishing standards and communities of practice.
• Promote innovation and continuous improvement, evaluating emerging approaches and technologies for improving ML products and services.
