Job summary

Placements24 partners with a prominent mining group to recruit a Senior Mine Planning Engineer for its strategic planning team near Randburg, Gauteng. The role focuses on developing and optimizing long-, medium- and short-term mine plans to maximize safety, resource recovery and profitability.

You will use Deswik, Vulcan and Surpac to model, schedule and optimize plans, collaborate with cross functional teams, and mentor junior engineers in a hybrid work setting.

About the Role

Our client, a prominent leader in the mining industry , is actively seeking a highly skilled Senior Mine Planning Engineer to join their strategic planning team, serving operations near Randburg, Gauteng . This role is pivotal in developing and optimizing long-term and short-term mine plans to ensure efficient resource extraction, safety, and profitability. The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in mine design, scheduling, and evaluation, utilizing advanced planning software. We are looking for a proactive and analytical professional who can translate geological data and operational constraints into practical, implementable mining plans. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and update integrated short-term, medium-term, and long-term mine plans.
• Optimize mine designs and production schedules to maximize resource recovery and economic value.
• Conduct feasibility studies, mine evaluations, and economic assessments for new projects and existing operations.
• Utilize advanced mine planning software (e.g., Deswik, Vulcan, Surpac) for 3D modeling, scheduling, and optimization.
• Collaborate closely with geological, operational, and engineering departments to ensure alignment of plans with objectives.
• Perform geotechnical and environmental impact assessments related to mine planning.
• Ensure mine plans comply with all statutory regulations, safety standards, and environmental policies.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior mine planning engineers.
• Stay current with mining technologies, industry best practices, and regulatory changes.
• Prepare clear and concise technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for management.
• Support operational teams in the implementation and execution of mine plans in the Randburg operational area.

Requirements

• BSc or BEng in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 8 years of experience in mine planning and engineering, with a strong focus on operational application.
• Demonstrated proficiency in multiple mine planning software packages.
• Comprehensive understanding of open-pit and/or underground mining methods and principles.
• Experience in resource modeling and reserve estimation processes.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a hybrid work setting.
• Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration or eligibility with ECSA is highly desirable.
• Previous experience working with mining operations in the Gauteng province is advantageous.
