Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Systems and Validation Engineer in Peterborough, UK.

You will lead validation activities from requirements through to conclusions, translating customer needs into system-level objectives and guiding cross-functional teams to deliver robust engineering solutions. You will provide technical leadership, manage validation risk, and collaborate with senior stakeholders to shape product testing and reliability efforts.

Qualifications

• Strong background in systems engineering, product development, validation engineering or related technical discipline.
• Experience leading complex engineering or validation activities end to end, from requirements and risk identification through planning, delivery, technical conclusions and recommendations.
• Knowledge of validation strategy and product testing, including risk-based validation plans derived from requirements and DFMEAs.
• Ability to analyze and solve complex engineering problems with data-driven decisions.
• Proven project leadership and ownership, managing risks, resources, schedules and stakeholders in a matrix organisation.
• Effective communication and technical leadership across audiences, coaching engineers and aligning cross-functional teams.
• Desirable experience in industrial diesel engines, powertrains or similar mechanical systems.
• Experience in engine dynamometer, machine, field or component validation.
• Reliability and durability development experience.
• Experience with construction machinery or off-highway applications.
• Proactive reliability methods and product quality demonstrations.
• Experience working with global engineering teams and external partners or customers.

Responsibilities

• Lead systems engineering and validation delivery for assigned products, programmes and technical projects from requirements and risk identification through to validated conclusions.
• Translate product and customer needs into system requirements and technical objectives, guiding system-level trade-offs.
• Shape risk identification and validation strategy with DFMEAs and risk-based Design Verification Plans linked to requirements.
• Plan and coordinate targeted validation activities: define test, build, instrumentation, data and inspection requirements while managing resources and schedules.
• Analyze evidence and lead technical problem-solving using test, field and inspection data to assess risk and document conclusions.
• Provide technical leadership across the organisation, communicating risks and decisions to senior stakeholders, and coaching engineers.
