Frontier Resourcing LTD is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established engineering organisation in Herefordshire or Hertfordshire. The role covers hands-on design work, ownership of projects from concept to manufacture, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams on specialist electronic equipment.

Qualifications

• Strong experience within mechanical design engineering, ideally senior or technically responsible
• Background designing electronic equipment, mechanical enclosures, chassis or electromechanical assemblies
• Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
• Experience managing mechanical designs through the full product development lifecycle
• Proficiency in 3D CAD design and producing detailed manufacturing drawings
• Good understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes and material selection
• Experience considering thermal management, environmental protection and mechanical reliability
• Ability to develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions
• Experience collaborating with manufacturing teams, suppliers and other engineering disciplines
• Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills
• Confident in taking ownership of complex design challenges
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
• Experienced in Electronics, Defence, Aerospace, Telecommunications, RF Technology or other high-technology industries
• Experience designing equipment for harsh environments
• Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, precision machining, moulded plastics or injection moulding
• Experience with BOM management and product configuration
• Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) systems
• Understanding of Engineering Change Notices (ECN) and Change Requests (CR) processes
• Experience reviewing engineering test data and product performance
• Experience supporting or mentoring junior engineers
• Professional engineering registration or working towards Chartership

Responsibilities

• Leading mechanical design projects from initial concept through to production
• Designing and developing mechanical components, enclosures and assemblies for specialist electronic equipment
• Creating robust, reliable and cost-effective mechanical solutions
• Producing detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, assembly documentation and technical specifications
• Applying DFM and DFA principles throughout the design process
• Developing mechanical solutions that consider thermal performance, environmental protection, reliability and product quality
• Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams, manufacturing departments and external suppliers
• Supporting the transition of new products from development into manufacturing
• Identifying opportunities to improve design efficiency, manufacturing processes and product performance
• Providing technical input into project planning, design estimates and cost management
• Investigating and resolving engineering challenges during product development and production
• Supporting and mentoring junior engineers
• Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering function
• Work on technically challenging mechanical and electronic product development projects
• Take ownership of designs from initial concept through to manufacture
• Collaborate with experienced engineers across multiple disciplines
• Influence engineering decisions and contribute to product improvements
• Develop technical expertise within a specialist engineering environment
• Support and mentor junior engineers
• Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation initiatives
