Job summary

Latent Edge Ltd in Ampthill, Bedfordshire is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established engineering team and deliver complex mechanical systems from concept through to manufacture. You will design components, create 3D CAD models, apply GD&T, perform analysis, and collaborate with manufacturing, electronics and systems teams in a predominantly on-site role.

We're working with a leading organisation in the UK defence sector to recruit a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for an established engineering team based in Ampthill, Bedfordshire.

This is an opportunity to work on complex mechanical systems and assemblies, taking designs from initial concept through development, testing and manufacture.

We're particularly interested in speaking with engineers who enjoy solving technical problems, taking ownership of their work and seeing their designs become real products.

The role

You'll be involved in the design and development of complex mechanical systems, working alongside experienced engineers across multiple disciplines.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing and developing mechanical components, assemblies and systems.
• Creating detailed 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings.
• Supporting projects from concept through detailed design, testing and production.
• Applying GD&T, tolerance analysis and design for manufacture principles.
• Carrying out engineering calculations and supporting FEA activities.
• Participating in design reviews and resolving technical challenges.

What we're looking for

You’ll ideally have:

• Strong experience in mechanical design engineering.
• Proficiency with Creo, SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
• Experience designing complex mechanical assemblies.
• A good understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, materials and manufacturing processes.
• Experience with engineering calculations, FEA or structural analysis.
• The ability to work independently and take ownership of technical challenges.
• Experience in defence, aerospace, automotive, industrial machinery or another technically demanding engineering environment would be beneficial.

You don't need to have worked in defence previously. We're interested in engineers with transferable skills who want to apply their experience to challenging engineering programmes.
