Senior Manufacturing Research and Development Engineer

Salary: From £42,683

Spirit AeroSystems designs and builds aerostructures for commercial and defense customers. Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, with sites in France and Malaysia, the company produces fuselages, pylons, nacelles, and wing components for aircraft. Focused on affordable, innovative composite and aluminum manufacturing solutions, Spirit supports global customers.

Role Purpose

  • Execute MR&D work packages/tasks from definition to delivery, working with engineers to ensure quality, schedule, and budget adherence.
  • Liaise with partners, technology providers, and customers, providing detailed reports and presentations.
  • Deliver MR&D work related to innovative technologies for future aero structures.

Position: Senior MR&D Engineer – IT / Operational Technology Focus

Location: Prestwick, UK

Research and Technology Department

Salary: From £42,683

This role offers:

  • 37-hour workweek (half day Friday)

Responsibilities

  • Lead work packages from scope and budget to delivery, ensuring timely, high-quality results within budget.
  • Manage a team of engineers and technicians to complete projects on schedule.
  • Collaborate with partners, technology providers, and customers, providing reports and scope definitions.
  • Support principal MR&D engineer in project reviews and grant submissions.
  • Develop project plans, participate in scope and budget definitions, and ensure adherence.
  • Prepare project summaries and presentations.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Develop innovative assembly equipment and techniques.
  • Coordinate with equipment suppliers for tool development.
  • Ensure technical solutions align with product development timelines and strategies.
  • Maintain compliance with MRL and TRL standards.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Understanding of engineering, health & safety, and environmental standards.
  • Experience in aerospace R&D environments.
  • Proven ability to plan and deliver MR&D projects on time and within budget.
  • Experience in scope development and project management.
  • Leadership skills for managing teams and projects.
  • Background in technology integration MR&D projects.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive attitude.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

Desirable

  • MSc in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering or equivalent.

Decision-Making Authority

  • Receive technical direction but have authority to plan, cost, and execute work packages independently.
  • Order equipment and tools within budget and under guidance.
  • Maintain inputs for work packages to ensure successful completion.
