Job summary

The University of Manchester is seeking a Senior Technician (Machinist) to provide specialist machining and mechanical engineering support across the Faculty of Science and Engineering. You will help turn designs into safe, accurate components and experimental equipment, supporting teaching, research and student skill development.

You will manufacture using a wide range of machine tools, supervise junior staff and apprentices, and deliver high-quality service.

Qualifications

• Significant work experience in a technical/engineering or scientific role or a qualification in science/engineering-related subject area
• Specialised knowledge in using machine tools/equipment including lathes/milling machines and CNC equipment
• Ability to demonstrate equipment operation to students in practical classes
• Experience with CAD/CAM software
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings

Responsibilities

• Manufacture components and assemblies using machine tools to high precision
• Demonstrate operation of equipment to students in practical classes
• Provide technical guidance and design advice for new experimental rigs
• Supervise and develop junior staff and technical apprentices
• Ensure delivery of service excellence and customer satisfaction
