Job summary

University of Manchester in Manchester seeks a Senior Technician (Machinist) to provide specialist machining and mechanical engineering support for students, researchers and colleagues, turning designs into precise components and equipment.

You will manufacture with machine tools, demonstrate equipment in practicals, and advise on new rigs while supervising junior staff. This role contributes to teaching, research and practical engineering skills within the Faculty.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in a technical, engineering or scientific role.
• Specialised knowledge of conventional/CNC lathes, milling machines and machining centres.
• Ability to demonstrate equipment operation to students in practical classes.
• Experience using CAD/CAM software.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Manufacture components using a wide range of machine tools to the required precision.
• Demonstrate operation of equipment to students during practical classes.
• Provide design advice for new experimental rigs across FSE.
• Supervise and develop junior staff and technicians/apprentices.
• Ensure delivery of service excellence and customer satisfaction.
