Job summary

The University of Manchester is seeking a Senior Technician (Machinist) to provide specialist machining and mechanical engineering support for students, researchers and academic colleagues. The role focuses on turning designs into safe, accurate components and assemblies, enabling high-quality teaching and innovative research.

Qualifications

• Significant work experience in a technical, engineering or scientific role (or a related qualification).
• Specialised knowledge in machine tools/equipment: lathes, milling, CNC turning/milling centres.
• Ability to demonstrate equipment to students in practical classes.
• Experience using CAD/CAM software.
• Ability to understand and interpret engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Manufacture components and assemblies using a wide range of machine tools to required precision.
• Demonstrate equipment operation to students in practical classes and facilities.
• Provide design advice and technical guidance for new experimental rigs.
• Supervise, motivate and develop junior staff and University technical apprentices.
• Ensure delivery of service excellence and customer satisfaction.
