Senior Lawyer - Property and Regeneration (Remote) needed, £39.94ph PAYE - Reference: OR18264
Responsibilities
- To undertake an extensive legal caseload of complex property and regeneration related work as part of the Shared Legal Service, including Landlord and Tenant work, and provide high level legal advice to elected members, committees, senior managers and staff across the Mid Kent Services Authorities (Maidstone, Swale & Tunbridge Wells BCs) and other customers in accordance with Lexcel standards and values.
- To keep abreast of legal developments in property and regeneration and help ensure that the Property and Regeneration Team operates in accordance with modern good practice.
- To provide legal supervision to less senior fee earners in the Property and Regeneration Team and work closely with Legal Support Officers to supervise administrative support on legal transactions.
- To be committed to the Visions, Strategic Plans and policy frameworks of the Authorities.
- To use and assist others to use information technology systems including the case management system (Iken) and to carry out duties efficiently and effectively.
- To participate in intra- and inter-departmental working parties and corporate groups across the Authorities.
- To represent the Authorities at external meetings as appropriate.
- To deputise for the Team Leader (Property and Regeneration) when required.
- To undertake other duties commensurate with the grade of the post and to undertake any training and development as required.

- To communicate with clients at the required level or as a client-focused role to communicate with clients at the agreed level.
- To assist as required in the Emergency Plan.
- To travel to offices of the MKS Authorities as needed and be available for evening meetings remotely or at offices, and in emergencies or urgent management issues.
- Driving Licence is preferred/required where applicable.
Qualifications and experience
- Qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive or other qualified lawyer with local government experience.
- Substantial post-qualification legal practice experience in property and regeneration, including advising Senior Officers and Members on all aspects of property and regeneration law (including Landlord and Tenant work) and procedures.
- A track record of providing legal advice and support to senior leaders and key decision-makers at the highest levels in property and regeneration law and practice.
- Experience of operating in politically sensitive environments and a good degree of political nous.
- Experience of working on legal aspects of large-scale redevelopment, with particular expertise in redevelopment and lettings of retail centres.
- Experience in dealing with and advising on Assets of Community Value – nominations, process, decision making and reviews. Experience and knowledge of the law in Planning, Contracts & Commissioning, Contentious, Corporate Governance; partnership working or working within a shared service.
- Experience of best practice, innovation and continuous improvement in the delivery of legal services.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of property and regeneration law and practice including landlord and tenant work, giving advice, drafting and negotiation.
- Knowledge and understanding of the political nature of local government and democratic process.
- Personal gravitas with the ability to operate with confidence and credibility at the highest levels of the MKS Authorities.
- Ability to travel and be available for evenings and emergencies as described; ability to communicate effectively with elected members, senior managers and staff at all levels.
This is a full time role on a temporary contract basis.
