Job summary

HM Revenue & Customs seeks a Senior Java Developer to lead design and development of secure Java services across legacy and modern platforms. You will drive test-driven development, code quality and incident response while providing technical leadership across projects and suppliers.

The role includes mentoring junior developers, defining technical direction, and ensuring services meet security and operational standards, with expected collaboration across product, architecture and operations

Qualifications

• Strong combination of advanced technical expertise, leadership capability and stakeholder management.
• Experience designing, developing and maintaining complex Java-based services across legacy and modern stacks.
• Knowledge of secure-by-design principles and test-driven development practices.
• Experience mentoring and line managing junior developers and promoting knowledge sharing.
• Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and supplier environments.

Responsibilities

• Design secure, scalable, resilient and supportable Java solutions with strong engineering controls.
• Write, review, and ensure clean, reusable, testable, secure code using TDD.
• Support live services, incident resolution, bug fixes and security updates.
• Lead or contribute to code reviews, design reviews and governance activities.
• Provide Intelligent Client capability on supplier-led and mixed-delivery projects.
• Support workforce planning and staff development within the guild.
• Continuously improve engineering practices, tools, processes, standards and service robustness.
