Job summary

University of Sheffield AMRC is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Interoperability) to lead the development of core interoperability infrastructure. You will design APIs, data pipelines, and integration layers across disparate systems, collaborating with researchers and industry partners in a hybrid, fixed-term role.

The role requires 2–3 years of software engineering experience, proficiency in Python/Java, and strong API/data pipeline expertise.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related area, with 2–3 years of software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, or equivalent, with a portfolio of work using Git.
• Proven track record designing interoperable software systems, APIs (REST, GraphQL, OpenAPI) and data pipelines.
• Advanced familiarity with reproducible software development, including testing, documentation, CI/CD, and version control.
• Solid software architecture, system design, and database management skills.
• Experience with containerisation/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and Linux Bash.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement software pipelines, APIs, and middleware for seamless communication between systems.
• Build data pipelines and orchestration layers (containers, microservices) ensuring reliability and data integrity.
• Architect solutions to connect legacy manufacturing systems and transform them into a modern digital ecosystem.
• Evaluate infrastructure and suggest architectural improvements and standards (REST, GraphQL, MQTT).
• Write clean, scalable backend services and manage open-source repositories.
• Champion modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, testing, and documentation.
• Produce comprehensive system architecture diagrams, API specs, and data-flow maps.
• Collaborate with researchers and engineers to translate requirements into scalable interoperability solutions.
• Lead technical project meetings and maintain strong stakeholder communication.
• Make ethical and sustainable technical decisions aligning with the organisation's strategy.
