Job summary

The AMRC at the University of Sheffield is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the development of core interoperability infrastructure. You will design cross-cutting architectures that enable disparate systems, datasets and platforms to communicate, working with industry partners and researchers to deliver robust data outputs.

With 2–3 years of software experience, you will contribute to APIs, data pipelines, and integration layers, while advancing in a collaborative, agile environment

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field with 2–3 years practical software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, or equivalent with Git-based collaboration.
• Experience designing interoperable software systems, APIs (REST/GraphQL/OpenAPI) and data integration pipelines.
• Strong focus on reproducible software development: testing, documentation, CI/CD, and version control.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement software pipelines, APIs and middleware for seamless system communication.
• Build data pipelines and orchestration layers, including containerisation and microservices.
• Architect solutions to connect legacy manufacturing systems to a modern digital ecosystem.
• Evaluate infrastructure and propose improvements to standards and protocols (REST, MQTT, GraphQL, SPARQL).
• Write clean, scalable software and maintain backend services and open-source repos.
