Job summary

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Dissection to join the Histopathology team. The role focuses on expert specimen dissection within RCPath categories A–C, following RCPath guidelines to support accurate diagnoses and high patient care standards.

You will lead and train the dissection team, deputise for the Histopathology Operations Manager, and work within a UKAS-accredited lab that handles ~43,000 cases annually and ~350,000 slides per year.

Qualifications

• Current UK professional registration is required.
• At least three years' post-registration hospital lab experience.
• High level specialist knowledge in histology.
• Experience in training and development in a busy hospital environment.
• IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology.

Responsibilities

• Undertake expert specimen dissection in RCPath A–C categories.
• Follow RCPath guidelines and national datasets with local direction.
• Train and develop others within the dissection team.
• Act as part of the B7 Senior BMS team, providing senior advice.
• Lead, advise and support the wider team; deputise for the Histopathology Operations Manager.
• Participate in meetings and contribute to staff supervision and reviews.
• Liaise with other pathology colleagues to ensure patient care.
• Ensure equipment is safe, calibrated and maintained; support quality systems.
