Job summary

Curtiss-Wright Corporation is seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer for our Letchworth, UK team to design rugged VPX-based computer systems and video products. You will drive embedded hardware development from concept to qualification and work with software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to ensure reliability and cost effectiveness.

Role requires experience in embedded systems with VPX SBCs, PCB design, and EMC/thermal testing. Hybrid work, UK travel, and development opportunities are offered.

Qualifications

  • Educated to Degree/HND level in an appropriate technical subject.
  • Experience in embedded systems with VPX PC cards integration.
  • Familiar with high-end Intel Xeon and NXP Power-PC VPX SBCs.
  • Proficient in schematic design using ORCAD/Altium or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in design of the Company’s products in a project team.
  • Design and develop ruggedised VPX-based computer systems or video products.
  • Maintain existing product line with obsolescence management and production support.
  • Ensure qualification tests (temp, vibration, EMC, etc.) are completed on time.
  • Write formal design documentation and participate in design reviews.
  • Support junior colleagues in technical matters and guide them.
  • Evaluate new technologies and introduce them into designs.
  • Take technical responsibility for allocated design tasks and assist production.
  • May represent the Hardware function internally and externally.
  • Likely travel within UK and abroad as required.

Job description

We are looking for a Senior Hardware Engineer to join our Letchworth UK Team! Our Curtiss Wright Avionics, Video and Systems unit with our HQ based in our state-of-the-art facility at Bournemouth Airport is looking for a Sr Hardware Engineer to join the design team in our Letchworth office. You will be responsible for implementing all aspects of the electronic design and development process, from initial concept through to the completion of sealed data packs. You will also liaise with software engineers, mechanical engineers, manufacturing and sales to ensure product is fit for purpose, cost effective and reliable.

Your Challenge
  • Participate individually and as part of an integrated project team in the design of the Company’s products.
  • Design and develop ruggedised computer system (VPX based) or video products.
  • Maintain the existing product line including obsolescence management, periodic circuit uplift and production support.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring allocated qualification tests (Temperature, vibration, EMC to name just a few) are completed successfully, both in-house and at external test houses.
  • To write formal design documentation
  • To attend and actively contribute to the effective operation of applicable design reviews.
  • To support and guide junior colleagues in technical matters.
  • To undertake new technology evaluation and introduction in product designs
  • To accept technical responsibility for allocated design tasks
  • To assist Production Engineering in the introduction of equipment into manufacture in a cost effective and timely manner
  • May represent the Hardware function internally and externally.
  • Infrequent UK and international travel as required.
What You Bring
  • Educated to Degree/HND level in an appropriate technical subject.
  • Relevant experience in embedded systems (Specifically at Letchworth, integration of VPX PC cards), digital and analogue design.
  • Familiar with high end Intel Xeons & NXP Power-PC VPX single board computers
  • Familiar with Schematic design using ORCAD/Altium or similar package.
  • Familiar with PCIe interface operation and design.
  • Familiar with DC-DC PSU design.
  • Familiar with Design for EMC including MIL Spec. Ruggedized Video Monitors.
  • Flexible and able to complete Environmental Testing to standards such as RTCA/DO-160/MIL810/MIL461, including detailed test specification and report writing.
  • Ability to fault find down to a board level.
  • Experience working closely with or in production is advantageous.
  • Experience within an aerospace environment is advantageous.
