Qualifications

This role offers an exciting opportunity to join the On-Board Data Handling team. Engineers at SSTL are involved in a mission from concept through to launch, commissioning, and operational life, providing a comprehensive cradle-to-grave experience and the chance to see your work in space within a rapid timescale. This key role will often sit within the core team of a satellite mission, interacting with other technical leads across multiple disciplines to develop innovative technical solutions.

Key Tasks
  • Act as OBDH Subsystem Lead and Work Package Manager in space projects
  • Identify and flow down spacecraft system requirements to the OBDH system
  • Deliver OBDH system solutions that meet these requirements following company processes
  • Manage and verify these requirements
  • Own the OBDH system and all related aspects
  • Handle system/subsystem level interfacing and trade-offs
  • Support design engineers and manage technical solutions
  • Manage and deliver satellite OBDH work packages, including budget and schedule
  • Interface with internal and external customers
  • Author technical documents such as interface FMEA, development/test/verification plans, procedures, and technical descriptions
  • Make minor updates to circuit designs (e.g., changing obsolete parts, performance improvements, ECN generation)
  • Design, implement, and verify FPGAs in VHDL
  • Support product development as needed
  • Work with typical OBDH system equipment: On-board Computer, Data Recorder, Payload Interface Unit
Previous Experience

5+ years of OBDH System Engineering experience in systems or OBDH electronics, ideally in space or aerospace industries.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills
  • BTEC / Degree in Electronics or equivalent
  • Strong understanding of digital electronics
  • Knowledge of FPGA design in VHDL
  • Experience with lab test equipment
  • Recent experience with schematic capture and simulation software (e.g., Mentor Graphics, OrCAD PSPICE)
  • Self-motivated with good work management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Good organizational skills and workload prioritization
  • Creative problem-solving abilities
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Work well under pressure with attention to detail
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrate company values: accountability, drive & delivery, effective communication, self-management, teamwork
Location

Based in Guildford with support for hybrid and flexible working arrangements.
