Job summary

Amey Ltd in the UK is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. You will lead a design team, mentor junior engineers and deliver rail schemes that meet quality, cost and programme targets.

Ideal candidates have Chartered status or progress toward it, strong rail design experience, and knowledge of health and safety requirements. We offer hybrid working, career development and generous benefits across a UK network of offices.

Qualifications

  • Developed experience and expertise within the Civil engineering discipline.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures.
  • Ability to produce or oversee rail engineering solutions meeting standards and client requirements.
  • Experience with health, safety and welfare tasks (CDM).
  • Progress toward Incorporated/Chartered status or equivalent.
  • Commitment toward professional development and achieving chartered status.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate subject or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team, delivering technically sound engineering solutions while supervising junior staff.
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables.
  • Oversee actions of junior staff and take responsibility for their work.
  • Manage budgets and project costs, ensuring commercial success of projects.
  • Liaise with clients and suppliers; attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
  • Assist in bids and work-winning activities.
  • Work on site on a visiting basis or full-time temporary role, including out-of-hours work.
  • Manage a locally based, single-discipline technical team when required.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. With shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions.

About the Team

As a Senior Engineer on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects including Wales & Borders. We are proud to support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in-house engineering team delivers design solutions across all project lifecycle stages and disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of rail safety and efficiency.

Our Engineers play an important part within the Consulting Rail Signalling team which deliver innovative and complex designs to our clients including Network Rail, Transport for Wales and others. As a Graduate Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your design team on a variety of rail design schemes whilst playing a key role on projects

The role

As a Senior Engineer, you will act as a team leader provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Rail schemes, whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. You will also oversee the production of technically sound deliverables for engineering commissions, such as in the preparation of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.

Responsibilities include:
  • To lead a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
  • Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
  • Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out-of-hours working
  • To manage the actions of a small to medium sized, locally based single discipline technical team, including the people manager role when required by the business.
What you will bring to us:
  • Developed experience and expertise within the Civil engineering discipline, probably gained in an engineer role or equivalent within Rail sector.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline
  • An ability to produceor oversee the production of technically sound Railengineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
  • Experience in undertaking project-related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Successful completion of the initial professional development leading to either Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence and to the level defined by their education
  • A demonstrable commitment to their plan of action and key dates leading to successful completion of either the professional review or end point assessment, resulting in the award of Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning
