Job summary

Qualifications

  • Developed experience and expertise within Rail/Civil engineering field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures relevant to civil engineering.
  • Ability to produce or oversee technically sound Rail engineering deliverables.
  • Experience with health, safety and welfare tasks per relevant regulations.
  • Professional development path toward Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent licence.
  • Commitment to completing professional review or end point assessment.
  • Degree or demonstrable equivalent further learning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team, provide support to the Design Team Leader on Rail schemes, and mentor junior designers.
  • Oversee production of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables.
  • Assist with budgets, track costs and ensure quality and programme alignment.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level and attend progress meetings.
  • Contribute to bids and the overall work-winning function.
  • Work on site on a visiting basis or full-time temporary role, including out-of-hours work.
  • Manage actions of a small to medium sized local single-discipline technical team.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Drainage Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. With shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions.

Key Projects

As an appointed Design Partner on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects including Wales & Borders. We are proud to support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in-house engineering team delivers design solutions across all Network Rail stages and disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of rail safety and efficiency.

The role

As a Senior Engineer, you will act as a team leader provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Rail schemes, whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. You will also oversee the production of technically sound deliverables for engineering commissions, such as in the preparation of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.

Responsibilities Include
  • To lead a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
  • Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function.
  • Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out-of-hours working.
  • To manage the actions of a small to medium sized, locally based single discipline technical team, including the people manager role when required by the business.
What You Will Bring To Us
  • Developed experience and expertise within Rail/Civil engineering field, probably gained in an engineer role or equivalent
  • Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline
  • An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound Rail engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
  • Experience in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Successful completion of the initial professional development leading to either Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence and to the level defined by their education
  • A demonstrable commitment to their plan of action and key dates leading to successful completion of either the professional review or end point assessment, resulting in the award of Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning
