Job summary

Amey Consulting in the UK seeks a Senior Civil Engineer to join the Rail Consulting team. You will lead design teams on major rail schemes, mentor junior engineers, and deliver technically robust schemes meeting quality, cost and schedule goals.

We value collaboration, safety and professional development, with hybrid working options across multiple regional offices and a pathway to Chartered status. You’ll influence projects from initial concept through to delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered status or progression toward it is desirable.
• Experience in rail engineering projects and applying design standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team, delivering technically sound rail design solutions.
• Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation.
• Oversee junior staff and manage project budgets.
• Liaise with clients and suppliers, participate in bid activities.
• Occasionally work on-site or in visiting/full-time temporary roles.
• Mentor junior designers and ensure quality, cost and schedule.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. With shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions.

About the Team

As a Senior Engineer on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects including Wales & Borders. We are proud to support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in-house engineering team delivers design solutions across all project lifecycle stages and disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of rail safety and efficiency.

These projects also provide a diverse range of opportunities for personal and professional development, whether you are working on long-term, high-value programmes or smaller, community-focused initiatives. Our Engineers play an important part within the Consulting Rail Signalling team which deliver innovative and complex designs to our clients including Network Rail, Transport for Wales and others. As a Graduate Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your design team on a variety of rail design schemes whilst playing a key role on projects.

The role

As a Senior Engineer, you will act as a team leader provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Rail schemes, whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. You will also oversee the production of technically sound deliverables for engineering commissions, such as in the preparation of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.

Responsibilities include:

• To lead a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
• The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
• Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
• Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
• Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
• Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
• Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out-of-hours working
• To manage the actions of a small to medium sized, locally based single discipline technical team, including the people manager role when required by the business.

What you will bring to us:

• Developed experience and expertise within the Civil engineering discipline, probably gained in an engineer role or equivalent within Rail sector.
• Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline
• An ability to produceor oversee the production of technically sound Railengineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
• Experience in undertaking project-related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
• Successful completion of the initial professional development leading to either Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence and to the level defined by their education
• A demonstrable commitment to their plan of action and key dates leading to successful completion of either the professional review or end point assessment, resulting in the award of Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning
