Job description

Overview

Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Electrical Systems
Flexible location – Derby, Warrington, / Hybrid
GBP48,000 – GBP62,500 + Excellent benefits

We are Rolls–Royce SMR, and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry – and that's a once–in–a–career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job this is a legacy.

This role involves delivering an industry leading, cutting edge design project for a new type of power station and providing technical expertise across the lifecycle of Electrical Systems for the SMR nuclear power plant. It covers the complete design of the Electrical systems, spanning system architecture, sub–system design and equipment specification and design/selection to realise the final verified design of the power station. You will work closely with the engineering teams from across the power station and apply a structured systems engineering approach to design.

Responsibilities
  • Translate high–level electrical requirements into validated system/component designs.
  • Design and implement electrical solutions that meet project needs, ensuring testability and compliance.
  • Collaborate with verification teams to define and carry out testing activities.
  • Use modelling and simulation to confirm functional performance and compliance with requirements.
  • Represent electrical engineering in project teams, technical reviews, and with external stakeholders (including regulators and customers).
  • Work across multidisciplinary teams to drive standardisation and best practice.
  • Identify and mitigate risks while supporting long–term planning and strategy.
  • Previous experience within the nuclear industry is desirable; a proven record of working across the electrical system lifecycle in a regulated industry (e.g. Nuclear, Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Automotive, Oil & Gas etc.) would be beneficial.

As we strive to find the best fit for this position, we are seeking individuals with a minimum level of experience, training, and qualification. We will consider strong candidates who meet around 75% of the requirements.

What we're looking for

You'll bring a strong background in electrical engineering and a proven ability to work across the full design lifecycle – from specification through to installation, commissioning, and maintenance of safety–critical electrical systems.

Qualifications and desirable criteria
  • Experience in electrical power distribution systems and components, with knowledge of common electrical design codes and standards.
  • A track record of developing design solutions from concept to detailed design, using robust processes and trade–off studies to deliver optimum outcomes.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering methodologies, ideally MBSE applied to control and instrumentation (C&I) systems.
  • Strong analytical skills to justify and underpin design solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills to present complex information clearly to colleagues, stakeholders, and regulators.
Pay and benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between GBP48,000 – GBP62,500 (DOE) plus:

  • Bonus – Performance–related bonus of up to 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance – GBP2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension – 12% employer and 6% employee contributions
  • Holidays – 28 days (+ public holidays) with the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days
  • Private Medical Insurance – BUPA single cover healthcare
  • Life Assurance – 6x pensionable pay
  • GBP250 one–off payment for new starters for home office purchases
