Job description

We are

looking to strengthen our Engineering team with a Senior Design Manager based at our Falmer office near Brighton with hybrid working available.

You will report directly to the Head of Engineering and your role will lead projects through their design phases for a portfolio of projects. To ensure cost-effective, technically compliant, and buildable solutions are delivered in line with all stakeholder requirements, as well as in line with programme expectations and in accordance with the project delivery process and engineering design procedures.

Key responsibilities:
  • Health & Safety (H&S): Be committed to excellence in H&S in design, complying fully with relevant local specifications, codes, rules, regulations, and all relevant H&S legislation. Ensure H&S hazards are identified and managed, and residual risks are communicated effectively to stakeholders.
  • Design Leadership: Lead the Design team to deliver responsibilities, focusing on meeting customer requirements and project objectives.
  • Cost Management: Be accountable for expenditure, drive efficiency, and manage overall costs for design by producing deliverables within resource hours and key dates.
  • Design Organisation: Organise all design elements, document in the Design Management Plan, and prepare monthly status reports.
  • Meetings and Communication: Attend and contribute to programme, project, and technical meetings.
  • Technical Excellence: Ensure technical solutions outperform on costs while maintaining quality and timeliness.
  • Support During Construction: Provide technical support during construction, assembly, and commissioning stages as required.
  • Standards and Quality: Ensure all technical work meets standards and specifications, following systems of work and quality assurance.
  • Sustainability: Contribute to sustainability targets by reducing embodied and operational carbon footprints.
  • Collaboration: Communicate effectively with partner organisations, disciplines, and leverage own experience.
  • Customer Service: Provide exceptional service internally and externally, representing the company professionally.
  • Representation: Promote the company's reputation in all client contacts and maintain a positive, solution-oriented approach.
  • Additional Duties: Undertake other duties or training as reasonably required, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Essential Requirements:
  • Extensive experience in multi-disciplinary design management within a design-build environment.
  • Degree in an engineering-related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status.
  • Delivery-driven with team management skills.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations and construction H&S.
  • Experience in large-scale project delivery.
  • Strategic, operational, technical, and management skills.
  • Good knowledge of water treatment processes, civil, and MEICA engineering.
  • Ability to present technical proposals confidently and clearly.
Desirable:
  • Working towards or holding an APM Project Management Qualification.
  • Experience working for a global organisation and with remote teams.
  • Experience in the Water/Wastewater Treatment Industry.
  • Knowledge of BIM procedures and techniques.
