Job summary

Skipton Building Society is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to design, administer and evolve business-critical database platforms. You'll join a supportive platform team delivering secure, automated data services with high availability and governance.

You will mentor engineers, drive automation, IaC and deployment tooling, and partner with engineering and delivery teams to ensure reliable, cost-effective data platforms across the technology estate.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience administering enterprise database platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, Managed Instance or similar technologies.
• Strong understanding of database architecture, performance tuning, high availability and disaster recovery.
• Experience designing backup, restore and business continuity solutions.
• Proven ability to automate database administration tasks using PowerShell, Python, SQL scripting or similar technologies.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code and database deployment automation.
• Knowledge of database security, governance and regulatory requirements.
• Experience mentoring engineers and supporting technical teams.
• Ideally experience with Azure data services and DevOps practices.

Responsibilities

• Designing, deploying and evolving highly available, secure and scalable database platforms.
• Shaping database architecture, standards and engineering practices to support business needs.
• Leading improvements in database automation, IaC, deployment pipelines and tooling.
• Driving platform reliability through monitoring, performance optimisation and capacity management.
• Resolving complex incidents with root cause analysis and preventative measures.
• Establishing database governance, security controls, backup and disaster recovery capabilities.
• Mentoring Database Engineers and collaborating with delivery teams to make data platforms easy to consume.
