Job description

Are you an experienced Structural Mechanical Engineer ready to tackle complex and significant engineering challenges in UK Nuclear Decommissioning? Do you thrive on applying advanced technical expertise to solve critical problems that directly support safety, operational excellence, and the delivery of major infrastructure programmes?

We're looking for a Senior Consultant (Structural Mechanical Engineering) to join our growing engineering team. In this influential role, you'll provide expert technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of nuclear projects, helping clients navigate complex engineering challenges while ensuring the highest standards of safety, compliance, and performance.

What you will be doing

As a suitably qualified and experienced technical specialist, you'll play a key role in delivering robust engineering solutions that support the full lifecycle of nuclear facilities and assets. You'll:

  • Lead complex structural mechanics assessments, stress analyses, and engineering substantiation activities that underpin critical design and safety decisions.
  • Provide expert guidance on structural integrity, failure mechanisms, load paths, and performance under normal, fault, and accident conditions.
  • Deliver and review high-quality technical documentation, calculations, finite element analyses, and engineering evaluations while providing technical assurance across programmes.
  • Collaborate with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams, acting as a trusted subject matter expert while mentoring and developing the next generation of engineers.

Who we are looking for

We're seeking a technically accomplished engineer who combines strong analytical capability with excellent stakeholder engagement and leadership skills. You'll bring:

  • A degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or a related discipline, alongside substantial experience applying structural mechanics principles within highly regulated industries.
  • Strong expertise in stress analysis, structural assessment methodologies, engineering substantiation, and numerical modelling techniques including finite element analysis.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent professional recognition), supported by a commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Excellent communication, report-writing, and stakeholder management skills, with a strong understanding of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Desirable Experience

You'll stand out if you also have:

  • Experience working within the civil nuclear sector, including operations, decommissioning, waste management, or new build programmes.
  • Knowledge of UK nuclear regulatory requirements, safety case development, and associated governance processes.
  • Experience using industry-standard analysis tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, LS-DYNA, Mathcad, or equivalent software packages.
  • Familiarity with relevant engineering codes and standards such as ASME, Eurocodes, RCC-M, BS Standards, and a master's level qualification or equivalent.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to work on some of the UK's most strategically important nuclear programmes.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements that support work-life balance.
  • Competitive salary, annual bonus scheme, generous pension contribution, and private healthcare.
  • Ongoing professional development, chartership support, and genuine opportunities for career progression within a growing organisation.

Why Join Us?

This is more than a consultancy role. It's an opportunity to influence major engineering decisions, contribute to nationally important decommissioning projects, and work alongside some of the industry's leading technical specialists. Your expertise will help shape solutions that make a lasting impact on the safety, sustainability, and future of the UK's nuclear sector.
