Job summary

Amey is seeking a Senior Building Structures Engineer to lead a project team in the built environment sector, focusing on nuclear and highly regulated projects. The role involves overseeing design production, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with safety standards, while managing budgets and client engagements.

Based in the UK with flexible site attendance across multiple offices, you will guide junior engineers, contribute to bids, and participate in on-site work when required.

Qualifications

  • Proven building structures experience and capability to lead a small team.
  • Demonstrated design governance and compliance with Eurocodes and Building Regulations.
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools including Tekla Platform.
  • Professional status with a recognised institution or working toward it.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team delivering technically sound structural solutions on projects.
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and deliverables to meet quality and cost targets.
  • Manage budgets and costs for deliverables across schemes.
  • Liaise with clients and suppliers, participate in progress meetings.
  • Contribute to bids and business development activities.
  • Occasionally work on site, including out-of-hours as needed, and supervise staff.

Title: Senior Building Structures Engineer - Nuclear

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Building Structures Engineer to join our Advisory team within Consulting. With shared office space in Birmingham, Telford, Manchester, Stafford, Sheffield and Bristol, we welcome applications from Senior Engineers across these regions.

The role

As the Senior Building Structures Engineer you will function as a team leader, providing and overseeing the production of technically sound deliverables for projects within the Built Environment portfolio. The portfolio may be single or multidiscipline projects.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • To lead a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
  • Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Significantly contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
  • Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out of hours working
  • Assuming the role of people manager when required by the business
Nuclear Sector Experience

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience of delivering projects within the nuclear sector or other highly regulated environments. Experience working on nuclear licensed sites, knowledge of nuclear safety culture, and familiarity with relevant regulatory and assurance frameworks will be highly valued. Applicants holding, or working towards, NSQEP (Nuclear Skills Qualification and Experience Passport) recognition are encouraged to apply. Whether your background is in project management, architecture, structural engineering, building services, surveying or multidisciplinary design, we are looking for professionals who can bring a strong understanding of safety, compliance, quality assurance and technical excellence to support the continued growth of our nuclear and complex infrastructure portfolio which will include; decommissioning and waste management, defence nuclear programmes, SMRs and working with advanced reactors and new nuclear build.

What You Will Bring To Us
  • Have demonstrable building structures experience
  • Experience of managing a small team, engineers and technicians, providing technically robust engineering outputs (designs, calculations, drawings, documentation).
  • Provision of technical leadership and guidance, ensuring compliance with standards and design governance including familiarity with Structural Eurocodes and Building Regulations
  • Experience of using 3D CAD software, Tekla Structural Designer and Tekla Tedds.
  • Experience of managing quality and programme performance across multiple schemes.
  • Professional engagement with clients and stakeholders, to support project delivery where appropriate.
  • Hold (or be working towards) Incorporated or Chartered status with a relevant professional institution.
